I am using a X-Fi elite pro soundcard as the primary source for my Linn active stereo system and I am wondering what impact the computer power supply might have on sound quality.

Has anyone experimented with the sound quality of various power supplys.

I am currently using a Silverstone Zeus 650W. CPU is an AMD X2-3800, graphics card Geforce 6800, 1 hd, 1 DVDr so I'm not short of wattage.

I was thinking of switching to a fanless or very quiet power supply.

My Plinius SA250 power amps in my main stereo system use 4 transformers per amplifier so power supply design must have a significant impact on sound quality.

Does anyone have any thoughts about computer PSU impact on computer sound quality ?

Thank You

I don't think it has any effect. Audio amps have to drive speakers with much more power demands than typical PC speakers as well as being the only source. PC speakers are powered by a wall outlet. The audio processor on the sound card is pretty much what determines the quality of the audio signal.

in my case it does
i'm using a philips auriilium USB soundcard along with the Prodigy PCI
and yes the aurilium does effected by 5v from PSU
so i mod the USB cables and made a separate PSU (not a switching one) so it can sounds better (much better actually)

I ended up getting a Zalman ZM-HP and have plugged in an Analysis Plus power Oval 2 power cable into it. The power cable made a huge difference but the Zalman was a pretty small improvement bui noticeable never the less. The Fan is quieter than the Silverstone or Thermaltakes I have used recently.

I strongly urge people to try quality Audio power cables if your serious about sound quality.

To take power from cheapo 14ga. wire feeding the outlet it's all plugged in to and making sound improvements is a great product indeed.

The hi-fi shop where I bought my cables said it wasnt needed anything better than cheap audio cables when connecting a pc sound card, as the noise is already quite high.

I have to say that my Tannoy sounds great still.
