So I have thrown this idea around for a week or so now and done as much research as I can and I think I *finally* have figure out how to do it. The root of the issue is my motherboard, evga 680i, only has 2 sets of usb headers. One will be used up by my media card reader. Then I have 6 usb ports on my case, stacker STC-T01. Each set of two is wired to a usb header 2x5 connection. So my thoughts have been, "How do I hook up all 6 ports at once?"
Well I can always splice them together, but then I can still only use 2 of the ports at one time thanks to how usb works and how a device grabs hold of the addressing space. So then I thought, "Maybe there is a usb header hub type of thing" Through many searches, I have found one oguy that took a usb hub and modded it to take usb header connectors. However, it was not a very simple mod and he was no longer making them for people.
So my solution is the following. I will be wiring up a bunch of my own cables for this. Supplies, 3 short cheap usb cables (both male ends), 1 2x5 female usb header connector, 3 2x5 male usb header connectors, enouch usb pins to wire the aforementioned connectors, wire to come from an old ethernet cable, and then the followsing 7 port hub: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1215773&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
This hub is EXACTLY what I have been looking for for the past week. It is an unpowered hub that allows you to connect a 2nd usb cable up to one of the downstream ports simply to supply power. It comes with the uplink cable and a 2nd cable which is designed for this secondary power, it comes with a male usb A connector on one end and a PS2 keyboard connector on the other. It simply need 5v though. So here is what I shall do, take the uplink cable that came with the hub, and cut it in half. I will wire the type B (not sure of exact name, the more squatre looking version of a usb connector) to the female usb header connector as normal. Then I will take the other half and strip off the data wires and wire the voltage wires up to the voltage connectors of the 2nd row on the usb header connector. Then I will take the 3 usb cables I buy, cut them in half and wire them to the 3 male usb header connectors. These connectors I will plug into the connections for the case usb ports. This way I will not need to actually modify the cable coming off the case either. What do you think? Am I missing any thing in here? I can provide a *very* basic wiring diagram later tonight.
