View Full Version : Supreme Commander Demo Tomorrow (Feb. 6)
I don't know if this is "news" enough for the News section, but the Supreme Commander Demo will be available tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to it :)
Publisher THQ has confirmed that it will release the playable demo for Supreme Commander, the highly anticipated PC strategy game from developer Gas Powered Games, tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 9:30 a.m. PST. The demo will include an early portion of the single-player campaign for the Cybran Nation, one of the game's three playable factions. It will also include a skirmish map named "Finn's Revenge," which can be played on easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels.

I was in there, along with some friends of mine. There were a lot of people and it's truly come a long long way since October when I started.
It's a very very CPU intensive game. Dual-Core and Quad-Core will really shine with this game.

Actually DX10 graphics aren't in there yet I guess I read that it was suppose to be implemented in a patch just a little ways down the road. Now I don't feel so bad for not having a DX10 card yet :)
Ive had a few games last 4-5 hours. 4 AI on Rush, makes for a different type of game, 1 Cybran, 2 Aeon, 1 UEF, oh ya much fun against the 2 of us. But we let them build up a little bit then when time came to go in and attack they had the same idea with Tech 4 waves and nukes. That was my first encounter of them actually using nukes and defending against nukes! That made for the longer game due to there entrenchment.

I played the first mission of the demo on a 2.53 P4. I guess you can already figure that things didn't run so well. The frame rates were OK for about the first 5-10 minutes, but by the time I built an army and the map had expanded a few times, I NEVER broke 2fps. I'm not exaggerating at all. I played at 0-2 fps for around an hour and still won anyway. Playing at low or high detail on the lowest resolution had absolutely no effect with a 6800gt. When the mission ended my fps immediately went up to 20+ on high details, probably because the game was no longer doing AI. I'm guessing there is some much overhead for the AI and keeping track of all the units that there's nothing left for graphics. Half the time my PC couldn't even run the sound without it getting choppy. I never ran out of ram with 1GB with nothing else running, the only problem is the CPU.
It was still kinda fun anyway. I really like how many units are moving around at once and all the chaos, makes things seem more battle-like. Some of the effects, especially the explosions, are very pretty.

for those of you that didnt like the UI, the developers said they are working on refining it to make it more slim. they also might be making a seperate UI for each faction, but they wouldnt confirm that part. but they are making it smaller

The UI itself is all scripts, so you can make your own if it bothers you that much. Or just wait until someone else does the hard work for you.

If you are finding it takes too long to build units and start fighting you are playing it wrong. After about 5-15 mins of gameplay I have about 10x the number of units I would have in a normal RTS. The only exception to this is the first single player mission where you don't have the resources or tech to make lots of units.

Thats the entire point of the game, you have to make strategic choices rather than microing some tank around like a 3rd person action game. Most of the RTS released over the last few years are based around who can click faster and have turned the genre into some bizarre 3rd person action game. Alot of RTS deliberatley criple the units and interface on purpose just for the sake of making it so you have to micromanage units more with things like limiting the amount of units you can select at once and hero units that require constant orders to be of any use.

Well I fixed my resolution problem, it won't let me play at 1680x1050 but if I play windowed and stretch the screen it works fine. I found that cranking up the AA to 2x made the game look MUCH better and frames still stayed above 25 FPS with all other details on high. Processor usaged stayed around 40% through the entire match on a 4.1GHz e6400, Ram usage was also under 700MB iirc. The more I play through the skirmish level the more I learn the intricacies of the game, it isn't easy to pick up and immediately dominate, then again I have always been playing against the hard mode. In the end you either need to have a thick wall of turrets or a ton of bombers/helos to destroy the monkeykings that the CPU will start pumping out in regular doses. I love the way the units are tiered up but it does make it hurt badly for the players behind the tech curve, lvl 3 critters will destroy lvl 2 and 1 while the experimentals destroy everything with much haste. Experimental artillery is crazy, nothing like flattening the entire level systematically :) I'm now very impressed and can't wait for Feb 20th. Now I need a GTS and another 22" screen :p:

You should beable to run a second monitor with little ot no hit in preformance. I experanced no drop in preformance.
Also there was a little thread on the Dual/Quad core systems not using its full power. This is how it goes:
:
The 2nd core is used for the sim so it generally won't be as loaded as the first core which does rendering. Hopefully your second core doesn't get fully loaded until you have a LOT of units in the game.
Another way to think about this is that rendering, which happens on the primary thread, generates as many frames as it possibly can using 100% of that cores CPU time. The simulation however has a fixed timestep and only has a certain amount of work it needs to do to "keep up" with wall clock time. This means that if your second core is fast that it won't be fully loaded all of the time. In other words the second core is idle part of the time because it's completed all of the work it needs to do.
As a sidenote I've been doing quite a bit of performance testing on quad core machines lately and they do give some benefit. In the perftest demo the first core will be at 100%, the second at 30-50% (in this specific timedemo), and the 3rd and 4th at about 10-15% each (mostly sound and some housekeeping work).
So while it seems theres little work going on at least on the second Core or other Cores. Oh can't wait to see a 10,000 unit game :) Thought 1,000 units was big mwahahah I want to see that army march across that screen in all its glorey.
I've done a Siege Bot/Monkey Lord/ Scarab build off with a friend on a map in beta. I had over 700 Siege Bots, I had loads of Monkey Lords (20) and a few Scarabs along with 8 silos of nukes. It was a small map and I nearly whipped him out early so we said lets have the biggest fight, while it took a while to get that type of production going. We had a even fight to the death, it was a huge bottleneck goign through 2 small passes but what took 90min to build (we where space limited) took nearly 45min to kill!
Not bad for a internet game with no lag at all, thats just an amazing feat right there over 1500 units gunning it out with little to no lag! I can't wait for the larger scale games.

Lol there's you problem :) I find in the first 20 minutes I am managing 5-6 seperate little groups of engineers building seperate projects and usually moving around atleast 1-2 task forces doing mop up work against raiding bots. I spent the majority of the game in a semi-zoomed-out state while only dropping down to a rendering level when I'm building networked buildings or defensive structures. I really can't wait till the full release comes out and multiplayer games can have more than 500 units, I hit a 500 unit cap in the demo.

The graphics are sweet for sure, Ill give it props for that. Also I see your point about the focus on macro on this game. I just don't like how the units react, it seems like there too 1 dimensional, just attack and be attacked with no abilities at all.

I just hate how the units move in columns.. I had ~100 assault bots assembled in a block, sent them out to destroy the enemy base and they started the trek out in a column. Stupid AI, I hope they fix that otherwise it'll make it hard to coordinate attacks.

it works just fine, you just didn't cycle through the formations. Select your units, right click where you want them to go, left click then use right click to cycle through formations, though I do agree that there should be more formations, better coordinated attacks ans better Unit group AI, though in the Single player that seemed to be fixed

Hmm I never used the formations, I've noticed it'll popup every so often when i mash buttons. I'll have to check this out :)

you can do automatic coordinated attacks. select one group tell them to attack or move somewhere then select all your other groups and double right click where you told the first group to go and all the units will move so that they arrive at the same time

is it me or is there no attack move? attack on ground makes units attack that exact spot, which is retarded....

Preach on Preacher! I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed this.... I have been having my guys go out on patrol so they will attack anything along the way.

at last its a game that brings something really NEW to RTS, not just fancy graphics, no attack move sucks, but the battles are great ...
Does anyone know how to change the view of the camera, I mean the angle? I have only been able to rotate, zoom and tilt

Hey all, I just noticed this a couple days ago (wondering why the shield area was so small and there was no tier 3 upgrade). You can UPGRADE the tier 2 shield generators. (sorry if this is super easy and you already knew, but I found it out not to long ago and it really helped.) Upgrades are from level 1 through IV

I'll add that the other two factions have T3 shields rather than a T2 then upgrade.
I really hoped that the demo had an upgrade icon rather than having to click that other icon first.
Hopefully final retail has fixed that, along with many other changes needed compared to the latest beta.

I wonder why these games are called "real time strategy"...
"Real time rush" would be more accurate.

Well every RTS game can be rush. Let it build up for a bit which I enjoy and you get the nice battles and is fun again :)
