View Full Version : What's the best cluster size for flash drives?

I bought a 4GB flash drive the other day, even though I swore I wouldn't, just because it was cheap ($20AR on buy.com). The default setup was FAT32 (obviously) but I switched it to NTFS to use with ready boost (which I devote 2GB to).

My question is this:

Is there any benefit to changing the cluster size from 4096 to higher (or even lower) for my use (ready boost + moving/wiriting 1 movie or several mp3s for transportation elsewhere)?

I do not use compression or encryption, so I don't really care if those are not available (as I know they aren't for over 4096), just looking for best performance for what I use it for.

I don't really know jack about cluster size, I've always used 64K for my raid setups just because it was the default. :p:

Any suggestions are appreciated.

For flash memory there really shouldn't be any difference. I'd leave it at stock NTFS size. Once you remove the drive heads from the equation all you're really talking about is ways to improve storage efficiency, but for the amount of space you could save and given there aren't any real speed benefits... yeah.

4-8KiB are the optimal cluster sizes for 4GB NTFS partitions
