Mobo: DFI icfx3200 (RD600)

Controller: Onboard ATI

Drives: 2 x WD 160GB RE Sata 3.0gb/s 1 X WD 320GB Sata 3.0gb/s

Would it be possible to run the two 160GB in RAID 0 and then run then 320GB in RAID 1 along with the two 160Gb's that are in Raid0.

Is this a good idea performance wise?

Or should I just backup the two 160GB w/ the 320GB from time to time (clone disk)?

That's RAID0+1 formally. No problem at all doing that and shouldn't be a performance hit doing so.

I don't know whether your BIOS can do that but it certainly is possible and sensible from a RAID standpoint.

ETA: raid0+1 would be something different: 4 disks, all disks same size, mirrored and striped, so that you have both speedup from raid-0, speedup from raid-1 and good safety.

Ill play with it this evening and see.

You might get a hit, depending on whether the controller can sustain 3 drive bandwidth.
Run two HDTach, or better two Everest Linear Read benches vs separate ones and you'll see if it degrades performance.

I know even Areca cards are hit by putting 8 drives on the same card in two arrays (they split the IOps and bandwidth).
