View Full Version : Evga 680i - mosfets whistle under load ...
Hello to you all ...
I've searched the forum for whistle/sound/noise and didnt found anyone with my problem , or at least I think so ...
When I try to run OCCT I hear strong whistle noise from the socket ... the second I stop OCCT - the whistle stops ...
I heard It once when I was overclocking real hard with BAD AXE , but it was silent comparing to the evga ...
Any suggestions ? help ?
thnx in advance ...
Btw , rig is -
QX6700 + Evga 680I (bios P24) + Cellshock PC8000 + Zeus 850W

Mine does not do this, you may want to drop a PM to Jakup as he is one of the evga reps here.
I have heard similar complaints on other boards so it may be a defective part on the board. It should not whistle.
Thanks for your answer , Fugger.
I've found this thread at evga forums, It seems that a lot of ppl suffer from this problem ...
http://www.evga.com/community/messageboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23372&whichpage=1
So it seems like a new bug for the 680i series ? or is it just the evga ? no one else here have / had this problem ?

i got tt prob too~ at 3.7ghz and 1.65V bios reading. but seems like its not really a prob...but i dunno... its been running perfectly fine thou~
my old av8 had tt problem too but it ran perfectly fine for more than 2 years~
Mine went to RMA ...
don't even wanna try to see if it will work fine ...
I'd say those are coils that whistle :)
Actually many boards do that, it just depends on vcore and cpu sample and ofcourse board itself. For example, at high vcore, like 1.5-1.6V+ if I run orthos I hear whistle on p5b dlx and GB ds3 as well :) Those cpus that heat more are likely to produce this effect at lower vcore.
yeah ... if it wasnt even at stock I'd be keeping my mouth shut ...
but even at stock + fugger said he don't have this problem ...
enough for me to RMA ...

I am having the same isue with my Striker, when testing 3DMark03 at high cpu frequency(~4Ghz)watercooled.I can't say if the noise remains when running on phase change, because of the noise the phase makes:D

Cap's can whistle also but if a cap is whistling you better shut off your PC, if a cap leaks, breaks or explodes kiss your mobo good buy and possibly other components.
usually the whistling is simply the coil packs, and if you touch them and apply some pressure the tone will change.
whistling coil packs are annoying but usually not a bad thing, bu i have yet to see a company deny an rma for it, most places know they arent supposed to do that and rma them right away.
yup - Evga support was great - they offered an exchange without any debate, But I will RMA it here locally.

Yeah I doubt it is a capacitor and most likely it is a toroid inductor, or "coil" as people have been calling them.
Most manufacturers put a dab of hot glue or heatshrink around the component to prevent the vibration. Sometimes this isn't 100% effective as thermal temp cycles can loosen the bond.

although i totally agree that if u have this at stock... something is REALLY wrong.. it shouldnt be and it should only happen... imho.. when ur cpu is clocked.

In my experience, coils dont whistle, they buzz or ring or whine.
Back in the old days we used to use wpcredit to alter a field that would disable the HLT state to stop CPU noise. (Halt State). HLT's on Intel cpu's go way back.
Assuming its NOT transformer domain switching or fan noise from PSU or inductor coil buzzing or whine, but true CPU ("mosfet") noise, I personally would disable CIE advanced halt state in bios, and all spread spectrums, and disable DEP in bios and edit boot.ini to
noexecute=AlwaysOff, not optin or optout
Failing that, it may be the new 6-8-(virtual) 12 phase power modulation on some of these boards cant deal with massive O/C'ing.
