I just recently did this for a client.

I found that the Linksys WRT54GS with DD-WRT firmware made the process very easy.

www.dd-wrt.com

It has built in Hotspot, Chilispot, radius authentication ability that make it very easy to setup a hotspot.

I simply enabled the Nocat splash and everyone has to agree to the terms outlined before they are able to access the net. I did not need the Radius authentication, etc.

That router is supported by DD-WRT....so you can just flash that router and get the same functionality as the Linksys I was talking about.

Check out here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads.php

Then click the v23-SP2 link....there is a hwsupport.txt file it lists your router as supported.

However, your router only has 4MB of flash ram...the image for the firmware is 3.2 - 3.7MB (you can't use the micro or mini, they don't have hotspot functionality) so there is not room left to enable jffs (journaling file system) so you can add the splash page, etc.

It works best on a router with at least 6MB of flash (v3.0 and below of the WRT54GS linksys have 8MB) All the new WRT54GS only have 4 as well...so the absolute best/cheapest solution is to find an older v3.0 or lower to give best flexibility.

Most 3d party firmwares have hotspot software which means they can connect with radius servers. This means you have to let your router connect with an radius server. The radius server has the user account information and depends who has access to the wlan and who not.
the Best way is using http://www.publicip.net/
Public-ip is simple. You use no security on the wlan router, and configure it as an accesspoint. Behind the router you put a mininal computer (server) with a cdrom drive. Next you can do is booting the publicip cdrom on the server. everyting goes automatically. Then you can register at publicip.net and make user accounts and completely control your own hotspot. all the configuration goes at publicip.net.
Making a good functional hotspot is a pain in tha ass, but with publicIP it shouldn't be a problem.
