In some games it is now possible to build virtual banks that can lend money that is convertible to real world currency. We are huge gamers here and we encourage creativity and all forms of innovation but this just seems like a really, really bad idea.
Entropia's parent company, Sweden-based MindArk PE AB, said it would auction five banking licenses, each valid for two years. The holders will be able to set up bank buildings on the science-fiction-themed planet of Calypso, charge interest on loans and advertise on in-game billboards. Previous auctions by MindArk for virtual "real estate" have yielded bids of up to $100,000

Duping/hacking aside, gold farmers will not destroy the economy.
Think of real world economies and competitive advantages. Outsourcing labor intensive tasks to China/India/Mexico makes more sense because the labor rate there is cheaper. Developed economies can focus on providing service and highly skilled works.
Here's a question for your simple mind:
1. You can get paid working in McDonalds for $10 per hour.
2. You can farm up 50 gold per hour in a MMORPG.
3. You do not enjoy either working in McDonalds or farming in MMORPG.
4. Exchange rate between in game gold and real life $ is 10:1.
What will you do?

i'll go to college and answer problems like this so that i don't have to farm gold or work at mcdonald's. does mcd really offer $10/hr? seems a bit too high compared to minimum wage ;)

^ That seems high to me, but In N Out burger gives $9 when you start so i hear. I think you have to go to burger school first though  Better than the $7.50 i make now.

$10 per hr is just an example. don't college interns get paid around $10 to $30 depending on skill set?
if you are a working adult and you hate both farming and working, its just more economical to work and buy gold instead of farming gold.
