I just picked up a new X-Fi Xtrememusic and I've got a weird problem. This is on a fresh install of XP, with the newest x-fi drivers. Every once in a while either a during a warm or cold boot, the card doesn't get recognized and I have a yellow exclamation point over "multimedia controller" in device manager. Reboot and that's gone and it says X-Fi again and I have sound. Seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. I can go 10 restarts without incident and then problem comes up again. Has anyone encountered this issue?

Strange. Never happened to me before. Try placing the soundcard into a different PCI slot.

The first time I installed the card, it would only work every other boot. Switching PCI slots did help somewhat, now it only fails to load the driver 1 out of every 10 boots or so.

Very strange. I've used my X-Fi in a neo2 plat as well as the a8r32-mvp with no issues at all. Especially surprised to see it work in the neo2, since creative cards are known to have issues with the nf3/4 chipset.
What motherboard are you using?

Do you overclock? It could be because your OC isn't stable hence messing with Windows recognizing your Xfi.
Happened to me a few times when I was still with Gigabyte DS3.
