I am purchasing an external multimedia enclosure to play divx\xvid files on a tv without the need of dvd player and having to burn a lot of dvd's. I think that a 5400 RPM would do but maybe a 7200 RPM would be better. What do you think?

80 GB 5400 RPM VS 60 7200 RPM? What brand would you get and if you can, provide exact model number. I think an 8 MB cache is best, not those 2 MB cache ones.

i think for only playing DVD 5400 will be enough

for sure the 7200 will be faster in copying but IMHO the extra 80GB is better

and for sure get the 8mb cache

Safrout is correct, 5400 should be sufficient for DVD/Videos and you might even be able to get away with a 2MB version if it is for the use in which you imply.

20GB more for only 2$ if you don't mind buying a samsung ( which i don't :) )

You're right! I missed that one. I just purchased the Samsung 120 GB instead. Thanks for all the replies.

I have a IBm thinkpad t40 with a 30gb 5400rpm drive with a 2mb cache and dvds run fine.

Watching DVDs off disk takes around 1 MB/sec. I suppose even the slow disk can manage...
