View Full Version : My DSL modem officially sucks major ass

With ATT DSL, i get multiple disconnects. i wake up to a limited or no connectivity from my modem.
Also when downloading with torrents, it just disconnects, and will not work without restarting the modem.
What is the best dsl modem?
ps: my current modem is a Speedstream 4200
Does anyone else have this issue or problem?

DSL doesn't have many consumer choices...I suggest calling your ISP and asking for a replacement.

Good thing i ditched At&t  With dslextreme, i just complained in a post over at broadbandreports and they called me the next day for no reason :D Sadly i'm still hitting 300kbps, but we're not paying $30 a month for it anymore :woot:

I fortunately do not have that issue. Its just the modem that sucks.
I pay $23 a month. (i just got it 2 weeks ago, before all that was availible was 24k dial)

You pay $23 a month!!?
I pay $35 a month for a 1.5 mbit down. F'ing boonies.
The Speedstream 5200 works well, as well as the 6250 if you want a modem router combo.
Do me a favor though, go to: 192.168.2.1 (your modem) and have yourself directly plugged into it. Look around for something that has "stats" or something, it'll have "attenuation" and "sych rate". If not, put a screeny of the main page (black out the IP), and we'll have to unlock your modem to see it.
Of course, I'd suggest the easier route of just getting a replacement...if after that you still have problems, you'd have to pull your stats.

Are you plugged directly into it?
Edit: Ugh, you have an older modem

EDIT: i found it http://192.168.0.1/
I just updated the firmware and i still get disconnects while DLing torrents. Even if i have my upload and download speed unlimited in utorrent, it shouldnt disconnect, right?
its also a 4100, not a 4200

That's weird that it's 0.1
And I wasn't guessing ;) Most modern modems are 2.1, 4200 is the one I posted, and ROUTERs are generally 0.1.
Look at this, your stats are TERRIBLE:
SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)
Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding
Line attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues
Your Stats:
SN Margin (dB) 2.5 -
Line Attenuation (dB) 59.5 -
So, I suggest getting a replacement modem. If that results in the same thing (and same crappy stats), I'm sorry to say they'd have to lower your speeds, your line just can't handle it.

I called ATT they ran tests and said my line had interference, i removed the filter, and they retested and they said it was 100% fine
we'll see soon
how long should it take for the stats to refresh?

Your attenuation is horrible like mine, head over to broadbandreports.com for some help, but i'm betting you'll have to lower your speed. Welcome to my world! :p:
