Is there some drawbacks with 256mb vs 512mb cards.
1600x1200 res games and dont include upcoming DX10 ones.

The main drawback is with games that use huge textures (ultra-high quality setting and/or high resolution). The more memory you have on the card the less swapping it's gonna take to load textures into that memory. Faster memory (on the card) will compensate for that to a certain extent.

now Graphics cards are bandwidth hungry and memory hungry, esp at high resolutions or lots of Eye Candy. You'll see a very noticable difference between a 512MB and a 256MB card with the same GPU, esp with ATI GPUs.
Now the 256MB cards are cheaper but normally it isn't that big of a difference
