which parts in a rig are future proof?

im building a rig in january, and some parts i will want to use in the future, when this one becomes to slow for the needs

i will get:

e6400
gigabyte gs3
tuniq tower
g.skill pc2-6400 (2x1gb) cas4
ocz gamexstream 700w
gainward bliss 7900 gs
x-meridian sound card
Antec Nine Hundred case
150gb raptor
320 perp seagate (from old comp, might buy another one though)
nec ad5170 drive (maybe a plextor one i dont know)
beyerdynamic 770 headphones

which parts will i be able to bring into my next rig (in 2/3 years)

i dont really see MORE power consuming pc's out in the future (theyre trying to make things more efficient right?).. the case i certainly will use again, and probably the sound card. the drive also

are there any other parts (maybe the tuniq tower) which will be future proof?

also, are there any areas i should maybe invest a little bit more in, to guarantee it a longer life, rather than being thrown onto one of my shelves to collect dust?

A 600w PSU would last you quite a few years,
so you can see that a 700w will last you longer
than it's lifespan.

None really, except maybe the hard drives. And it depends on what you do with your rig. if you are a gamer, right now, a dual core cpu, 2x1G RAM, a good overclocking motherboard and dependable power supply will get you through for a while. More specifically, probably an Intel C2D, two gig RAM (research the extreme bandwidth section), a 680i motherboard, a 8800 GTX and an OCZ 800 power supply ought to do well for the next year. That ought to run Crysis at pretty much any resolution you want. Plus, you can always go SLI after a bit. This type of system will also be great for video editing and will also run Vista with all the bells n whisltes.

If your not a gamer, well, if VISTA is not your cup of tea, then pretty much any S939 or socket 775 system you put together for low money will do.

As Sailindawg said no parts are garanteed to be future proof but the parts that you chose should do you well for a year or two I guess; by then we might have a new intel socket, we might have pci-ex16 rev2, ATX ver. 3.

The key word is 'might,' I would say though, that yes the system will do you good for a couple of years or so:p:

Future-proof for how long?

How long is what really matters.

If it's one year or so, your setup will be fine.

If you are talking about three years or more..., well, things change rapidly in consumer conputing.

if you're looking at 2-3 years, your optical drive, I'd buy a plextor 755-sa (SATA DVD-RW). OEMs go for about $80usd atm? hard drives are re-usable, a good ATX case is re-usable, a good power supply will last a while. and depending on your cooling solution, that is recyclable in a new system. I know my phase change and water cooling has gone through a few teardowns and rebuilds.

ok, a new angle on the question... how long till an e6600 will be a bottle-neck for graphics cards
