I had a few of these steppers made up and I must say, I'm very pleased with them. I wish I had made up more. They are 1-1/4" in diameter and 1-1/2' tall. They have been machined with brazing in mind. The way I put them together eliminates most chances of screwing up.
Threading the inside of the suction is Jinu's idea. My hat is off to him. The dude is very smart, and comes up with lots of good ideas. By threading the inside, you can screw the suction line in a bit. This way you can suspend the evap by the suction line while you braze. By doing this, the evap is not sitting on anything. It will heat up faster because nothing is absorbing the heat from it.
The next time I braze one together I will take pictures and add to these.
I find it is much easier to put a piece of 1/8" copper tube in the top of the evap when I'm brazing it together and then come back later and braze in the captube. I am showing a long piece of 1/8" copper tube in these pictures but it can be shortened if you like. It makes no difference. There are many ways to skin a cat. This is only one of them.

Very nice runmc :D. When brazing evaps...is it not easier to place them flat, on a piece of slate or something similar? A material that doesn't conduct heat? That way, they wont really loose much heat when being brazed...

Nice evaps Ron :toast:
Brett - Not slate, it can explode when you heat it. Get a few fire bricks for only a few pence each, you can use them to reflect heat to make brasing evaps a lot quicker :)
Tom
Ahh right. I was told that slate is quite heat resistant?
Where can I get these fire bricks from :)?

Slate like most stone or concrete contains moisture, when heated rapidily water expands to vapor by a factor of 1200 to 1 causing anything with moisture in it to pop& fracture and shoot fragments at you caused by the rapid moisture expansion.

If you suspend the evap in mid air while brazing, there is nothing taking heat away from it and it is recieving 100% of the heat you apply to it.
Nice... i like the color of naked copper :)
Why the big space at the bottom? Why no step there?

Wow man these are looking awesome. Are you going to start producing these on a regular basis? If so I may be interested in a few!

Scientific calculation determined the bottom space
Plus it made a space wide enough for two 1/4 holes to be drilled for suction feed. It has a total of eight steps counting the top and bottom steps giving the liquid refrigerant more time to evaporate.

There were ten made up the first run. I will have more made up as needed.

Here is my stepper !
These pics are before extensive cleaning of course.

A little bit of shine (not complete)

And this is a pic of the 1/8" copper pipe Ron supplied so I would not melt my captube. Worked out well I think.

All in all I am very happy with the design. Everything fit together perfectly.:)
Thanx Ron,

I like the 1/8" tube for ease of assembly, but it is also very convenient if you want to change cap tube size. You don't have to put the torch to the evaporator again. Reheating the evaporator after you have brazed it together can lead to endless leak chasing, which at times, can't be stopped.
It looks like you did a good job of brazing it together.

Thanx Ron,
m411bDo your purged the evap while brazing?
Ron, the evap looks great! Do you think your evap is better than chilly1 (clones) ?

Purged with CO2. I will try to take a pic of the inside throught the suction tube later on.
OK, sorry there will be no pics of inside of evap. My cam sucks to bad for such a good pic.
Well actually here is a pic, although not to good but you can see the inside kind of but in person it is very clean.

I wouldn't dare say it was better :nono: , but I see just as good of results with this evap as I have seen with any other evap I have tried. Cooling a quad core is a different story. The spiral can't handle a quad load, and I doubt this stepper will either.
How much does your evap weights?

6.1 onces - 172,93 grams (does that sound like the right conversion??) 0.173 kg
edited to correct conversions :)

6.1 onces are 172,93g (grams), which are 0.173kg (kilograms)

So which design would you say is best for quad core? I would guess they need to have more mass? For example... a thicker base, or thicker spirals?
