Got a quick question for you guys...
Well I killed my Radeon 9700 Pro (cuz of condensation) and my replacement Radeon 9700 Pro is a horrible overclocker. :(
Original was a -10 part, new one is a -30.
Did ATi artificially restrict the new Radeon 9700 Pro overclocking potentials so they don't eat into the Radeon 9800 Pro (which are not available up here in Canada yet... :() sales?
Tried flashing bios's and best I can do with my Swiftech MCW50-T hooked up is like 360 core 330 memory!
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?
Thanks!

Did you try to raise the gpu voltage a bit with a resistor?

mkleingeld thanks for the quick reply...
No, I have not volt modded the card yet as it seems to be a lousy overclocker by default. :( My old card did 410+, 360 easy without volt modding, perhaps I was just lucky with that card.

Colin - by any chance, did you check the ram chips? I had one card that was very similar. It was really really bad. It had different ram chips than my first two. Did you get that card back from RMA? I just sent mine in on Friday, and I'm hoping that I don't get a dog back. She was a great card, I guess for me though six is not a lucky number. :(
P.S. and thanks again ;)

The last card I had was an RMA from ATi and it was the best clocking card I have used.

well that just ruins the theorey
ive heard of a few people who have had bad OCin cards after RMA.....perhaps ATi make RMA cards less OCable so if one is damaged by OCin the person RMAin canmt do it again
have you tried soft modding Colin?

Are you talking about softmodding it to a 9800 pro?
Tried it with mine, but not had any luck.
All it does it make it appear as a 9800 Pro in device manager, no 3d Mark increase or anything else.

I had a good one at first - it had the silver plate on the back but i dont remeber what rev. I broke a ristor off and took it back to Fry's Electronics. I got a -30 rev with pink plate on the back and it cant overclock no where near as good as there original. My first one went to 410-360 no prob with no mods. This new one only went to 390-350 with no mods. It also has the same bga ram chips as the original. After modding it it is fine, but i wonder what the original one would have went to modded.

when i softmodded my 9700 into a 9800, it made about a 120pt increase in 3dmark01. however, i get artificacts in games after about two min, which blows.

Colin besure that the R9700 additional power molex is the only thing that you have on the power connector. Put it on the power chain by itself no other devices. I've found that this affects my OC on the R9500pro R9700pro and R9800pro.

Major Slaughter thanks for the advice. I tried that already actually, I think this card just sucks in terms of OC...
Hmm, I think I'll do a bad flash and RMA again... ;)
