Could some one who knows linux good make a how to for us/me?
If it is beyond the GUI interface I need a step by step. The comand line went out with DOS for me so I am just not getting it. Please some one. And if
F@H is along the same lines might put that in also.
Thanks All and merry x-mas,
Scott

Which version of Linux are you planning on using? With Ubuntu 6.10, installing the BOINC manager and client is very easy. You don't have to do any command line stuff.
With Debian-based systems, most apps are installed using something called the Synaptic Package Manager, or though Add/Remove under Applications (icon on desktop). What I usually do is install the BOINC manager first using the Add/Remove feature, then install the BOINC client using the Synaptic Package Manager.

I have a copy of Ubuntu 6.10 if that is easy I can do that. I am wanting to patch the kernel with open-mosic and run a floppy based farm off the one install is the plan. I have a bunch of old pc's that could make a cluster and might do something. As a one at a time install and run is just not worth it on a 400 P3 if you know what I mean.

I was trying to install it on a pen drive and running Cluster Knoppix but it was all comand line and I just didn't understand it. Over my head.

Ubuntu 6.10 is very user friendly. You do have to use command line every now and then, but not to install BOINC.

Well i've got debian on my linux router and you only have to do this:
1. you go to your home folder and download boinc_blabla.sh
2. sh boinc_blabala.sh
3. cd Boinc
4. ./boinc -attach_project url key, when it is finished you stop it with control +c
5. screen ./boinc (if you do not have screen installed, use apt-get install screen)
That's it mate :toast: :D

Did you have a look at my Rosetta Linux guide?
It pretty much sums the basic commands up I need for daily use, so I guess it will be fine for a beginner.
I am currently setting something interesting up on Linux. Hopefully I can finish it by the end of this year.
The linux guide can be found here:

If you want to know anything, just ask in this thread and I will try to help out.
I didnt use Linux for a few months now, because of two dead HDDs, but I am compiling Gentoo right now :)
Edit: Just noticed you mentioned open mosixs. I am working on that right now and if everything works as I planned you will one need one server PC and all nodes can be completely discless. They just have to support network boot. If they dont you can implement that in the bios ;)

Yes there is just something sexy about a linux cluster and I want to make it work one way or another. I like the idea I can add in power buy just booting a O-M aware pc. I have a floppy booter for open mosix and can use that just fine, Net boot and all that is way over my head at the moment. You making a how to as you go on your little project?

Got to thinking about this and Littleowl and I decided that under WCG it would get invalids every time as the benchmark would be different and hence the claim would be different. Anyone else got a thought on this?

I am not sure if it will work with WCG. I didnt think about that stupid benchmark.
I will find that out soon. I wish I had more time for all that stuff :/
If it doesnt work, there is still the possibility to use openmosix as a diskless option to boot the nodes using netboot or floppy disk and use the nodes as "normal" PCs, that just dont have a HDD. That would work, but the big pro to just manage a single PC will be gone then :/
Maybe it still works if the server PC is the fastest PC of the cluster. Then the nodes wont be claiming a higher credit, so their results should not be invalid.
But in order to care about that it has to work in the first place. I will try to get it working asap, but my Gentoo install needs some lubbin before I can mess around with openmosix.
