View Full Version : Finishing off a build.

I am buying my components in 5 days and need 4 more components for my build.

I am missing a mobo.

The picks I had put the price too high. I would like opinions on good mother boards for an e6600 that aren't really expensive (bad axe 2, 680i, etc) but can over clock preferably $150 and under. I am talking to my internet provider to try and get a new modem for free. I added shipping into all costs, which will likely be $66 for bulk rather than the $100 for each seperate piece. There is also around $70 in rebates so far. I need a mobo and I need to know if the super talent ram will work with suggestions.

I have posted the rest of my build in case anyone needs information or even has suggestions about that.
Round about total including a $200 mobo totaling $2,300.

That cpu wont need much overclocking... but depending whether or not you want sli... there are a couple choices for mobos. First, for sli, I would advise either the 7600 GS or 7950 GT. For SLI, I would personally go for the 680i or P5N-SLI. the 680i is build for overclockers, and you can expect maximum overclocking from it (depending on how oc-friendly your core is). the P5N-SLI allows minimal overclocking. With your processor the P5N will allow around 2.9Ghz (9 x ~320). If you just plan on using one card, I would advise an 8800 GTS and a P5B mobo. the P5B has good overclocking with its Intel chipset. Hope this helps, happy pwning! :D

All of the 680i's are way too expensive at least $100 over what I am wanting to spend. You didn't mention which p5n you were specifically referencing. Which p5b did you mean also? I thought those were mainly good for E6300/6400 chips.

I am only going to use a single card but as I stated before I am waiting until second generation dx10 cards so I was looking for a decent card to have while waiting for those to come out. I don't have the cash at the moment to throw on a $450 to $600 card.

how much do you have to work with? I may be able to give ya some pointers on a few things you can do much better on.

I have no actual budget but I would really like to keep it below $2,250.

Long story on why etc. In the end I will have to borrow someone else's credit card to do the ordering. I will be paying them to pay off their credit card but I can't justify to them in my own head to allow me to spend upwards of $3,000. I can live with $2,000 to $2,300ish.

Any pointers are well worth hearing.

The only reason I choose the infinity was because you can mount the fan almost anywhere on it, was going to mount the fan to blow up out of the blowhole on the case, if the Tuniq can do that then sure fine, not sure if I can find it in stock at newegg though.

Thanks on the info about the floppy, I know you can use them for Raid drivers and really old school games even some bios changes. The last part was what had me wondering if it was actually needed.

The ati x1900 and such are a bit out of my price league I would think, around 200 to 300 right?

Doesn't the perpendicular recording make the seagates a better buy? Just wondering on what is the difference when they both come to about the same price?

The reason about the mouse and keyboard was because they were a bit cheaper. On top of that I remember reading an article a few days back commenting on the death adder (new razer mouse) and how laser mice weren't actually better that optical was the best and everyone went laser because logitech did to make a commercial selling point. They come to double what I had, what is the warranty difference?

I changed up my mouse pad per your recommendation.

I was looking mainly at the corsair because it was modular, I don't think it would be too bad to go with a non-modular PSU do you? I can't find the efficiency on the model but I will keep it bookmarker for now.

Yeah I know you can ground yourself by touching metal etc, I have pulled parts and put new ones in without ever grounding myself too (hopefully the case took care of that back then). I will be building on a wood floor without anything wooly on, I don't really need the bracelet. I do need tools if anything needs to be screwed in. I own none and I am guessing at least a couple things won't be thumb screws or clamps.

Monitor was the cheapest/decent 1680x1050 wide screen I could find on new egg. It was also cheaper a couple weeks back.

Isn't the P5B mainly for E6400/6300s? What is the difference between the deluxe and the vanilla?

Thanks for the speaker suggestion.

Wouldn't the auzentech x-plosion with dolby be better than the x-fi gamer? Especially since most x-fi's are the same with different drivers?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829156001

All of my prices included shipping. I think I was at around a $1700 mark before we started with a 190 board, a 130 speaker, a 90 sound card, a bump up of 16 for the mouse pad, and assume I went with the keyboard I am hitting an estimated 2.2k, this isn't counting the I am assuming $300 graphics card. Even with all changes I added in around only 100 off so $2,400 is still a bit too much. I would really like to try and get it closer to 2,000 if not on the nose.

Yes, if you want a good performing system my sig is a good look at what you can do, granted theres some moderately expensive stuff in it, but the P5B deluxe normal (vanilla is terrible) is a fine board for a 6600 its what I use mainly. The 975X is outta your price range I believe, but would highly recommend the P5B.

To put the Warranty on the Mouse and Keyboard being their flagship line of gaming stuff, I spilled a bottle of water (well my cat did) into my keyboard I emailed logitech and told them exactly what happened and where I had purchased it and when. They sent me a RMA number for it to their warehouse and shipped me out a new board in a matter of days. Very fast service on it even though it was something I did to break it not a fault in the product very satisfied with the service.

As far as perpendicular recording and seagates Im not sure, I think WD is perpendicular too, all I know is they are pretty fast drives in comparison to other 7200rpm. I have yet to have a problem with them, the WD caviar has an average read of about 65-70mb/s for me which is pretty decent considering my raptor averages 90-95mb/s.

Azunetech from what I have read can do EAX but not that well? I read up on it at DriverHeaven but I dont think it was the same model, I have a XFi Xtreme gamer fatality and havent had a problem with it on this Mobo.

As far as the power supply goes,

OCZ GameXStream 700w
OCZ PowerWhisper Technology
Multi-GPU ready
Internal 120mm fan
ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V
OCZ ConnectAll universal connectors
-1 x 20 and 4Pin ATX
-1 x 4-pin/8-pin CPU (supports double CPUs/supplies stable voltage)
-2 x PCI-E
-6 x 4-pin peripheral
-2 x 4-pin floppy
-6 x S-ATA
High efficiency - 80percent at 115V (Typical load) , 83percent at 230V (Typical load)
Overvoltage/Overcurrent/Short-Circuit protection
Active PFC
MTBF---100,000 hours
100 to 240Vac 10-5A 50/60Hz

And yeah the X1900 is like 300$. Check out the X1800s

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102698R 256mb version (id say this at $179 is in your "throw away" category)

That is a nice warranty for the keyboard. Do they have the same with the mouse or no clue?

Yeah the 975x's look to be out of my range. I am seriously considering the p5b deluxe, I was also looking up the biostar 965 any clue if that will suit me as well? It is about $80 cheaper too.

I do plan on OC'ing be it the near future or later down the road so I am trying to get parts that will enable this for when it happens.

Looks like only seagate and hitachi do perpendicular for now
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular_recording
(side not the get perpendicular flash in the links is funny)

For EAX only creative can do it 3.0 and up to 5.0 I think is the latest. All other sound card manufacturers are only allowed proprietary rights to 2.0, EAX is an enviormental reverb effect algorithym.

The Powersupply looks good, one last question about it. Will the cables reach to the top of the case?

I found this for a card on newegg, not sure if it is safe though.

Good night

Yep the cables will reach to the top of the case no problem, its a very quality product. I even had excess cables I had to do some wire management with heh.

I personally would go with the Asus P5B dlx as its tested over and over im not to sure about the biostar. I know over at the intel forums theres about a 100 page thread on the P5B for fixes and what not that make it a nice lil board for the money.

And I would assume the mouse has a similar warranty, but its very solid construction and not too much you could do to break it unless you damage the laser unit somehow?

And that 1900GT is good for a throw away card, I completely forgot about it last night heh If your holdin out for the R600 maybe?

Teratism
12-16-2006, 07:26 PM
Yeah I am holding out for the R600 or the 8900s. No need for a directx10 card at the moment and I get to save up money for when the games start coming out.

I will go with the OCZ gamexstream you recommended.

I didn't go with your case recommendation because I was looking for as much silence as possible from my rig. My last computer (one I am currently using) is a Gateway model and has been breaking down so it randomly sounds like a car engine is revving next to me.

I think the seagate drives have a 5 year warranty and the western digital have 3? I could be mistaken.

The Tuniq Tower is out of stock at newegg so it looks like I can't grab one, know of any others that you can attach the fans on multiple sides?

Can't tell about the RAM
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=124992
Looks like early weeks were microns but later they may have switched to elpida. I was originally looking to get Buffalo Firestix but of course they are out of stock until after the new year (edit new egg took them down completely).

For a monitor I was hoping to get the LG 204wt but that runs in the $300 range and can only be bought at a best buy or some other brick and mortar store.

Still deciding between the x-fi and the x-plosion. I took the speakers you recommended, the klipsch promedia 2.1s are out of stock and more expensive anyways.

I am still considering on the mobo, I will update the original post with changes.

I have 2 7900gs in sli, e6400, thermaltake aguila case, ebayed samsung syncmaster 740B, 1 cheap maxtor crap drive, a pioneer dvdrw, 2gb ocz pc6400 platinum, antec neo he 500. All around 1600. If you have 2250 to spend then get: antec neo he 550 (its wonderful, and supplies more than enough power for almost everyone's needs), e6600, evga 680i motherboard, 2 7950gt, 2 western digital/seagate whatever you want, better screen than mine (which is good enough), better mouse and keyboard than mine (10 bucks from fry's), and you'll be very happy. The OCZ psu will end up junking your case with wires, so get modular antec neo he 550. Its efficient too, 85%.

Teratism
12-16-2006, 07:57 PM
I have was thinking of going modular, I hear the antec p180 doesn't have that much room for wire management. The PSU will have to be able to run a next gen directx10 card also, not sure if a 550 watt will be fine pulling that. That is why I originally had the corsair hx 620 but it is damn expensive.

I don't know of these Fry's people talk about. I live in the North Eastern USA so I don't know jack in the boxes or fry's or white castle (think that is new york).

A 680i mobo is almost $300 way too much, I am trying to get this build to about $2,000 so I can pay it off quick and not feel bad using the person's credit card.

Read this if your curious about the perpendicular drives. http://anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2803.
Seagate are the only perpendicular drives that i am aware of. in the review they compare the 320 gig seagate vs WD's 320gig drive. performance is near identical. the only reason they gave the award to seagate is because of their 5 year warranty compared to WD's 3yr. I have yet to have a WD fail on me. They are both the same price; so it boils down to which one you prefer, but definately get the 320 gig drive if its seagate because they are claimed to be their fastest drive.

I knew I remembered reading that awhile back and couldn't find it again.

Very nice combo with the 500 gig Seagate. I haven't used either brand yet so it is all in the same realm to me on which is better. They sell for the same, one is quieter (Western Digital) and the other has a better warranty and a nice combo (Seagate) it is really a toss up unless there is any other information I am missing?

Anyone else for a bit of help cheapening the rig and what mobo I should get? Preferable around $150.

Please any more suggestions? I have 2 days before the ordering and do need a motherboard. I have heard the p5n sli and the p5b deluxe, they are both close to 200, hoping not to have to go that high. There is the biostar tforce p965 which is around $100 but I think is only good for an E6300/6400.

Haven't seen any P5B Deluxe OEMs. Do they go by another name? Any other suggestions if I can't find one?
