ARECA Technology Corporation announced the availability of the new PCI-Express to SATA II RAID controllers using ARECA’s field-proven RAID 6 technology. These controllers support 12, 16 and 24 SATA II hard disks and are based on the Intel IOP341 I/O processor for optimized performance. “Most organizations have employed RAID technologies and consider it critical for effective data management in today’s computing environments,” said Billion Wu, CEO, Areca Technology Corporation. “Today, however, these computing environments are further characterized by larger-capacity disk drives, enclosures with more disks packed into them, and increased shared storage. With Areca’s cost-effective and innovative RAID 6 technology combined with the RAID 6 hardware acceleration of Intel’s I/O processors, customers now have greater choices to meet the demands for increasingly fast, flexible, and reliable data access.”

The new ARECA RAID controllers support one DIMM socket with deault 256MB of ECC DDR2-533 SDRAM and can be upgraded to 1GB. ARECA has benchmarked the ARC1280, 24ports PCI-Express SATA II RAID controller using the 800Mhz Intel IOP341 I/O processor measuring read and write cache transfer rates of 1624MB/s and 1295 MB/s respectively with sustained RAID 6 write transfer rates of 771MB/s. The Areca ARC-1280 features a new DDR memory architecture (DDR2-533) and high performance PCI-Express bus interconnection, providing unsurpassed data availability. With the single adapter card form factor of the ARC1280, it is now possible to match the interconnect speeds of 10Gbps iSCSI, dual 4Gbps Fibre Channel and Infiniband, commonly used in enterprise-level NAS or SAN arrays. It will be most suitable for those who need high capacity storage with high sustained transfer rate with high level of data protection, such as digital media production, HDTV streaming, and remote sensing image processing The AREAC latest RAID controllers are now available in Singapore.

those would be nice for some serious raid arrays, but 24 hard drives is a lot to fit in one case

It's gotta a SoDIMM memory slot..

Some people buy large harddrives and some people are crazy.

Unless you get a 700GB HD. 24x700GB is about 16 TB.
