Ha! From the looks of the board I thought they just took a blowtorch to it, but I guess it was just a dead unit. Cool though!

It's just dielectric grease or liquid electrical tape, no doubt shamino has been running it under DI/phase.

If you are brave enough to try nicking off the pain-In-tHe-asS on a working GeForce 8800, do tell us how it works out, right over at our forums.

That's at the end of the VR-Zone, would seem to indicate it was a fairly dead card.

I would have thought Dielectric grease too.... Especially at VR-Zone...

the card was dead before they took the IHS off, thats why they did it, cuz the card was dead so it was a good test subject. its just hte angle of hte image.

Not sure about the thickness of the thermal interface material, but contact looks pretty even - I certainly wouldn't risk removing the IHS on a £500 graphics card for probably small decreases in temperature/increases in clocks.

Nice to finally get an idea of the die size though, now we need a g80/r600 side by side comparison.

I don't mean to be rude, but are we looking at the same picture here?

According to the pics the contact is absolutely horrid (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53627&stc=1&d=1165523988)

There's really no core-die contact at all.
You can see there's a huge air bubble on top of the GPU instead of TIM. One might think the missing TIM would be stuck to the GPU core but the first picture has the GPU visible with mere stains of TIM. Layers of grey-goo TIM™ are nowhere to be seen.

Looks much worse than on S939 A64 (http://www.helsinki.fi/~llounent/Disintegrated_heat_spreader.jpg).

interesting pics, the core used apparently sponges instead of metal shims like the 7-series.

It looks to me like they wiped the TIM off the die... there's spots of it all over the PCB.

Why couldn't they release it without the ihs...?
