How often do schraeder valves leak, i have had 3 on my current system that have leaked and i am not sure if this is a common error with schraeder valves or if i am overtightening them or if i just got a bad set of valves?
Also on a side note, does anybody know what kind of pressure an argon valve can withstand? i got one for pretty cheap that i use for my nitrogen while i am brazing and i would like to use it for pressure testing but i am unsure of how much pressure it can handle.
Any ifo would be greatly appreciated

Do you think it is the core that is leaking or would i have to replace the entire valve? Or would it be a bad idea to use a flare connection for all of the valves and then when they leak you dont have to rebraze a new on on?

You can use a special core removal tool that allows the core to be removed without releasing the pressure.

Schraeder valves always leak no matter what you do but if you put a cap on nice and snug you shouldnt have a problem.

It leaks bit too often for my taste. So far I've seen about 5% of them leaking over time without cap on...

Leaks on new ones are rare and if there is a leak replacing the valve core fixes it as its the valve core that does the sealing.
Be sure to remove the valve core before brazing or they will almost all leak as heat will destroy the seals.
There is a special tool for removing and replacing a valve core without the loss of any gas or having to pump down the system on system that are already charged.
It's also used for removing the valve core during vacuuming,as the valve core is a major restriction and removing them will cut vacuuming times in half.
you can also buy a thermometer that inserts thru this tool directly into the liquid or gas stream for very accurate temperature readings.

Do you by chance have any idea where i can pick one of these up at? i tried googling it and i found a bunch of bike tire stuff. :D
These would be handy to have there have been a couple of times i have had to re-vaccum the system because i forgot to put the valve core in.

Try Johnstone supply or ACR. United Refrigeration should have some as well.

here:look over the products:http://www.yellowjacket.com/prdetail.cfm?PrimCatID=24&Auto=1#a3143
the superheat kit is complete with ball valve tool, valve core extractor tool, broken core extractor, thermometer(for direct superheat readings) and rethreading tool for damage valve core threads

Nice, I'll head over to johnstone and see what they got. I usually go to Gustave A Larsen, which they may have it as well, but at least now i know what to ask for.
Thanks a lot guys. :)

So it is better to vacum with the cores removed then? How much for one of these kits as I cannot find a price?
Thanx, m411b

The tools run about 35.00 to 60.00 dollars depending on if you get the old gate valve style of the newer ball valve style
(quarter turn), they also make them with a extra side outlet, thats a convenient place to hook your micron gauge,as it should be close the the system. But again that really not necessary, but that option does not add much cost.
the complete super heat kits with all the extra broken core removers and re threaders run well over 120.00 iirc but you just need the basic tool. You can add the extra's latter but other than the thermometer I rarely need the other tools.
So start with the basic tool if money is a object.
Be sure to get one for 1/4" SAE as that is what we use. their are other thread sizes & types

I just checked here in town and i can get the new ball valve kind with the side port on it for about $40 at gustave larsen. A bit more than i was expecting but i can see the need for a tool like this and it will soon be added to my tool collection.
