View Full Version : overclocking socket F 2220s

Well,

I'm venturing into the overclocking world. Before I overclock the 8800gtxs I thought I should get the rig cpus up as high and stable as I can. I've managed to overclock the opterons to 3.17ghz fully stable under all conditions. I will bench mark this weekend. I can get get the clocks up past 3.25ghz, but I notice some weird bahaviors. I clocked back down to 3.2ghz, couldn't find anything wrong, but felt paranoid - so I throttled back to 3.174ghz. No issues. Rock solid.

Since these are dual cores each, I'm concerned that ther are timing issues that I have not taken into account.

How high has anyone managed to get a two socket dual core opteron 2220s to go? How much overhead is there really?

THX in advance.

I wonder anyone try OC this b4?

Actually I have seenoptron 2218s and 2220 os the single chip on the board being overclocked at several Japanese sites. The owner did not divulge much in terms of stepping, bus, hypertransport layers, ntune, or any of the other variables. Too boo, my japanese is non existent. So I figured this forum would be a good place to ask.
Also, the opteron as I understand it, fits in the 4x4 board and those come with overclocking utilities as well.
So hence the question, anyone have good stable overclocks with 2218s and 2220s.

Hi Venturi,

I think you are lucky to get the 2220's up to 3.17.
The tyan board doesn't have any voltage options does it?
The board also doesn't let you adjust memory dividers either right?
My guess it's the memory holding you back.

Also, how can the 2220's go into the 4x4 board? Will the bios support ecc reg?
If you want to overclock, check out the asus kfn32-d sli. This board has bios support for different memory dividers, timings, fsb, voltaqes etc. I though for a time, the 4x4 would be built on this.
It has PCIE16 (2) as well as PCI-X and onboard SAS.

I know of the kfn32-d, but I'vw been trying to get this done strictly through ntune. I would rateher do it at a bios level - given a choice.

You are correct, the 3.17 is without any modofication. However, I noticed that the 2220se, did not overclock well untill after I moved to the 1100w tagans. I guess the SE version of the cpus and the dual 750W power supply did not like each other.

darn nice overclock for not touching volts and such, actually. Not a lot of AMD's hit 3.0+ on air with stock volts last I remembered.

Hearing of nearly 3.2GHz on stock volts on a dual socket platform is quite impressive and is somewhat renewing my faith in AMD. :)

Nice rig and clock.

I will dig it for you Venturi!
In meantime can you do some benches for us and pics of this monstrous RIG??

Great overclock, I think you got everyone by surprise with this.

I think they will not go much higher on more volts but who knows...!

As I approach the 3.2ghz mark there appear some flaky behavior. The 2d world is fine. But if I launch a game - I can play it - but if I try to exit back to the desktop - it reboots. Also, on occasion, the windows explorer seems to lag on shutdown.

Ig I go back down to the 3.17 mark, all the quirks disappear. Feel like I have hit a wall.

Is it air? Or is it timing differences that can't be accounted for. I'm willing to use water, but before I take onthat headache again, I need to be sure its heat related. I don't think it is. The answer lies in voltage, timing, and settings.

I am also slightly limited by registered buffered ecc ram at ddr2 667

v0dka

No need to go with water if youre not planning on increasing the voltage beyond what aircooling would let you do, tempwise. If youre seeing 65C loaded now ofcourse water would also be a good thing, but from your posts it doesnt sound like that.

What you need first is voltage increase, and maybe then watercooling later.

edit: but note what I already said above, I dont expect too much from extra voltage, 3.6Ghz just sounds way too much for Prime stability. Even 3.3 or 3.4Ghz seems incredible. Not to mention youre on air too!

I defer judgment until pictures come in.

This would be unusual without voltmods.

I suspect that it is your ram slowing you down. Especially in that you have 16G.

To get 3.17 GHz on your system you have to run the clock at 227 MHz. Therefore your ram is running at 227/200*667=757 MHz. I think that this is highly unlikely at stock voltage and timings with 16G in that system. If you are lucky, you may have but beyond this I don't think so. Try lowering your memory clock if you can. Also lower the htt to 800.

Check your system logs for check errors...I suspect that you have a bunch from ecc corrections.

The high end opterons don't seem to be good overclockers.. On my system I have 2 854's.(2.8 GHz) If I go beyond 2.95 on one processor, prime95 fails, and I can go to 3.05 on the other and it fails. If I raise the voltage, there is absolutely no change.

So far its air cooled.

Might be little too tight to watercool and run all the necessary wiring/hoses

And obviously the OP set a memory divider.

(OP?)
The board I use is the ASUS k8n-dl.
I can set the memory divider to whatever I want.
The overclock stops at 2.95 even with additional voltage and the memory at a lower clock. Increases in the northbridge voltage also make no difference.
I've used clockgen, ntune, etc with no difference.
The power supply is a SIlverstone 650W Zeuss
Do you think I shoulda gotten higher than 2.95?

Err, the K8N-DL is a socket 940 board. I thought we are talking Socket 1207 here?

In any case, the board in the pictures is not a K8N-DL. The K8N-DL has 6 RAM slots on different sides of the CPU.

Is it mprime stable?

So what do you use the second PSU for?

venturi
12-08-2006, 04:13 AM
PSU 1 and PSU 2 operate at the same time. When I hit the power button, both come on. Same thing when I turn it off or let the OS do the shutdowm

PSU 1 is used for:
Motherboard and cpus (8 pin, 4 pin, and 24 pin)
Floppy
USB multireader
DVD burner
Physix card (but not using it right now)

4 blue led fans use the motherboard headers.

PSU 2 is used for:
2 8800gtx (4 pci-e connectors)
8 750GB sata (raided) drives
6 120mm blue led fans

All fans are adjustable and run on the lowest speed setting (very quiet pc)

1st - At 2560x1600 - the video cards were not getting enough power from the rails on the dual 750w prior design. I was getting lock-ups or reboots from not enough juice.

2nd - the SE edition of the chips use considerable more power, running 4 cores.

3rd - that's a lot of ram

Problem solved now.

At bootup, the extra power helps with the array spinning up as well.

God that is an impressive system.I am dying myself to build a Quad Fx rig and I am sure it will be pretty similar to your rig once I have finished, minus 8gig of ram and about five HDD's of course, lol.

Thanks for the pics of that system though, it really is damn impressive and I am really envious.

Oh btw those SCSI drives aren't working atm (card doesn't work on this board). Silly board only gives 1x lane to the 2nd PCI-e 16x slot if GFX card in 1st slot (SCSI card needs 4x lane).

Board does 266MHz through clock gen, bios only lets it go up to 210MHz (despite manual saying 300MHz). Asusman says, "Due to the concern of system stability, the upper value range of CPU frequency was set to 210 and it will not be changed. Sorry for this inconvenience and thank you very much for choosing ASUS product."

Has mem divider and timing options, vdimm to 2.0V (and they're all like, "warning excessive vdimm may damage memory modules").

Clockgen let's it go up to 266MHz.

I get so frustrated with clockgen though cuz you really need to take small steps with it. I'll freeze at weird numbers. Then reboot and start all over again.. But then again I dont reboot to often:)

I looked at the manual for the k5n32-d sli and it seems that there is some options for OC. However, you say thaty ASUS limits it to 210?
Probably the same for this board.
My guess is that they did this because their bios is based on the asus k8n-dl system where you cannot go above 210 in the bios without hitting a wall.
Clockgen does work though.
