View Full Version : G84 chip from Nvidia

NVIDIA is working like beavers to expand its DirectX 10 capable generation. It had and still has a great success with its expensive line of G80 chips known as Geforce 8800 GTX and GTS, as they are selling like veritable hot cakes.
Well they are hot cakes and there's no competition at the moment. But the DirectX 10 capable generation needs a mainstream contender and that’s what G84 is all about. We only know that the chip is derived from G80 and will have less real pipelines and of course will end up smaller.
It is scheduled for late March or early April 2007 introduction and we can also confirm that AMD won't have its mainstream DirectX 10 to compete with this in time. So this one might once more be the dominant mainstream chip in the market.
This means the birth of $199 to $249 DirectX 10 part is not that far away after all. End of 2007 will be DirectX 10 hardware for everyone as both Nvidia and ATI will full switch to DX 10 compatible chips and will try to get rid of the DirectX 9 parts as soon as it gets

So let me get this straight, 15 days ago Digitimes says they weren't selling, now the Inq claims they are "selling like hot cakes."

Not so much SLi for me, but as long as its faster then a 7900GT and is at a decent price point ($200~ USD) then I'm all over it.

Nvidia did it wrong with their lineup
they should have released and afterwards,..
GTX 786mb---GDDR4 refreshing
open space---(1)GT = full gtx but with 640mb )
GTS same but with 512MB---(2)8700GTX = bey bey GTS, GTS specs +DDR4
open space---3)8600 1/4GTX specs GDRR3 1.1ns 512Mb
open space---3)8300 1/6GTX specs GDRR3 1.4ns 256MB
Nvidia will do it the way they always do...If there's one thing you can give them credit for, it's being predictable in how they scale their family and doing it well. While this rough guesstimate may not be exact, it follows nvidia's history:
(x)800GTX (100%) ala 128 shaders
(x)800GT ala 112 shaders?
(x)800GTS ala 96 shaders
(x)800GS ala 80 shaders
(x)600GT (50%) ala 64 shaders
(x)600gs ala 48 shaders
(x)300 family (25%) ala 32 shaders
High-end first, then slightly more midrange, then low-end, then high-end refresh, with neutered versions of former higher-end cards to fill the line-up. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Thats way too far away. I'm not waiting till April next year and neither am I spending upwards of $450 for a dx10 card.
Going to wait to see how dx9 cards handle q1 2k7 games (supreme command, ut2k7, quake wars) and might just take the plunge then.
