Read both links.
With the PS3 running yellowdog, you knew this wasn't going to take long for someone to bench it next to a computer... The results speak for themselves.

i had the feeling it was weak considering it was in a ps3 lol.
thanx for the info.

Geekbench also isn’t able to exploit the eight vector processors on the Cell processor.
So the benchmark were only run on one core:stick:

single core vs. native dual core is what the tests really show isn't it? The tests probably don't harness the power of the 6 remaining SPE's for what they may be worth. :shrugs:

The SPE's are for number crunching and stream processing, they are not going to be any good for running an OS. That is what the PPE is designed to do.
These results are what anybody who has studied the Cell architecture should expect. In fact, if it was any good at running an OS (even with the SPE's), that would be a surprise.

Yeah Cell is a hit or miss. Mostly a miss it seems.

making benchmarks run nicely on Cell is hellish

So its only the crippled in order power pc based main core being used in those benches...:stick: of course performance is going to be low.

If you want something to run an OS on get a computer not a PS3. It's that simple really. Why even bother?

hehehehe we love our benchmarks hahah
it doesn't surprise me that it gets smashed anyways......
remember those PS2s and Celeron 500MHz CPUs they had.....hell lots of people didn't lose any sleep over that and played tons of games no dramas :)

The point is that many believe that the sony Ps3 will be stronger than a Regular Pc. That may have been true with Single core , but as we progress to Quads the picture may have change. This is what many people is interesting to find out.

it still might be. the applications that will run best on the cell are the ones written for the cell, exactly as nn_step said:

making a benchmark run nicely is just as hard as writing any other application that runs well; it's not worth the time writing benchmarks though.
