View Full Version : Affordable Gaming Network Solution?

Ok, so I have a little dilemma at hand. I need to have internet on my upstairs computer, and also on my gaming rig downstairs. I measured it out, and a wired solution would mean two 40 feet wires with a router in between. Is there any chances of data loss? What about a wireless solution? Is there anything affordable that will be fast enough for UT04 or something along those lines? Wireless N is the newest thing, but a bit expensive for 2 computers. Any ideas?

Why would you have to have 2 40ft cables? I dont understand. Data loss on Cat5e shouldnt occur til more than 200feet, so you should be fine with a wired connection. Wireless would be a bit tougher, a bit slower, and a little bit less reliable.

Wired Cat5e or Preferable Cat6 would be best solution.

I use a 50ft cable on a regular basis, it shouldn't be a problem at all if you aren't running alongside any high current lines.

Spec is 100m (300ft) for ethernet. You worry too much.

Can you drill a hole? That will cut down on needing so much cable.

nah. get a wrt54gs with the extra mem and put dd-wrt on it and max out the xmit power. +3 ms on ping than LAN. totally acceptable. much cheaper than all that CAT5.

As 99% of people said cat5 is the way to go. You might need to spend some $ in a good drill if you want to :p. Being serious: I use cat 5 at home ( 20 meters of it) connecting my comp and my parent's. Soon my brother's will be hooked :D

Pft. Cat 6, gigabit LAN. But drill through lots of walls if possible, the shorter the cable the better.
Or try 802.11n wireless.
