I will be getting an E6400 ES(with 4MB L2-rev A1)(http://www.itestate.com.au/products_detail.asp?code=PD00004341) soon and it costs more than the retail which has only 2MB L2. I know the 4MB L2 is nice, but would the ES(A1) have many bugs and problems that were probably fixed in the retail version? I need to know this before buying it.

thanks ;)

well, if that's anything like the fab A 945P motherboard I've got sitting in my drawer, I'd guess that intel made a lot of revisions before the retail i945 Chipset debuted.

I'm contemplating buying that same CPU from them. Slightly concerned that I won't be able to sell it down the track as it's ES.

i saw some links at OCAU regarding OCing.......i would stay away from these

according to eva these are very early ES CPUs which are :banana::banana::banana: OCers and run REALLY hot

Hmm I thought ES cpu can overclock better than retail ones, although they run hot at least they are fast. Is that always the case?

And Stx I saw you posting at Whirlpool Forum as well :P

not necessarity

ES chips are nothing more than trial CPUs before the real thing..............much like beta bioses on motherboards until final version is released (i.e. official release/retail product)

i think it's a bit of an urban myth that ES CPUS are all better overclockers than retail ones

dinos22, out of those 3 cpus you have on your sig, only one of them is an ES? The rev B is a retail ones right?

It is a bit of an urban myth, though there is some reality to it in my opinion. From what I've seen The ES step 5's have tended to clock better than their retail counterparts. Granted this is not always the case.

A1 were hot and didn't overclocked more than about 3.0-3.2 even on phase based on my testing. Although the idea of a low default multiplier and 4MB of L2 cache is very tempting you WILL find that it is not the OC'er that you want it to be (most likely). I wouldn't buy an E6400 A1 ES. My recommendation? The Xeon 3060 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819117104).
