Well I've been burning a bunch of vacation this holiday since it will expire the 15th and they wont let me roll it to 2007, so I've been pretty damn bored.
This evening I figured, what the hell, lets update my bios and see if I cant squeeze a bit more mhz out of this ol rig.

a8n-e 1013 bios with opteron 146 and 2x1024 buffalo pc3200 memory sticks.

Now if I remember right I maxxed this cpu out in the area of 2950 @ 1.65vcore... but I've been running it at 2675 @ 1.275vcore for awhile now. That's at...

10x267, ram/12 httX3.

First I tightened a few ram timings:
3,8,3,3,3,11,15,5,3,2 became 3,8,3,3,9,11,2,2,2

Then I gave myself a little more vdimm, 2.6v to 2.7v and vcore, 1.275 to 1.425... a little testing and I'm running 2800, all this with a 1000rpm fan on my typhoon.

I'm not going to bump up any more mhz, as my ram needs 3v to really break 240 (@ 233 right now) and I dont feel the gains worth the extra heat, power and wear. I'm gonna try and work my vcore and vdimm back down as low as I can get em again though.

Everest Memory benchmarks...

Before: 6040, 1848, 51.5

After: 6348, 2373, 48.7

Typical desktop after reboot (NV tray, audio tray, avs, firewall, usb tray, and gbpvr loaded) in both cases.

Priming @ 1.35vcore atm. 1.325vcore gets errors.

Nice how you gain a little more. And that you enjoy it.

My CABYE has been losing its ability on air. Requiring more and more voltage.

What vcore did you run it at? I remember at higher vcores early a64's had that problem, but havent seen it before on anything but CH and NC's to be honest.

nothing ridiculous, it was a N chip and ran 3ghz at about 1.48v. After it needed about 1.52v just for 2.96ghz after almost 9-10months running stably @3ghz. I noticed the temps were a bit higher. So i remounted 3-4 times but, no change (must be an "aged" sensor).

The other CPU, a CAB2E has been running around 1.63v 3ghz on air for 1year now and no degrading so far. It is a T chip. (and runs very cool with the IHS on!)

Ouch that sucks... man I remember when the opty 939's were just out and everyone wanted the N's.. is this a common failing for the N's or were you just mentioning that for reference?

Just mentioning the other differences apart from steping. I don't think its common for N's, but it may be more common to random failures than T chips.
