View Full Version : P5B Dlx doesn't seem to like PATA drives

OK, maybe I missed a thread on this, but it is becoming obvious that the P5B Deluxe doesn't overclock well with PATA drives. Anything above 435 begins to cause Windows boot problems/corruption. I know it isn't 1) the E6600 chip, since even at low speeds it happens (450 x 7) and it does 4GHz on air or 2) the RAM, since it is OCZ DDR2-8000 running at timings well below spec and I am running 1:1. I have the PCI clock locked at 33, but I suspect that isn't working. I already hosed one XP install, and my other XP drive is giving me blue screens and I don't want to torch that one.

I don't have a bootable SATA in my bench locale right now, besides, I want to eliminate PATA as the suspect first before I run out and buy a Raptor, just to find out the board sucks.

Is this mobo just averse to PATA drives? BTW, I tried booting it off of a SATA dongle but the BIOS doesn't recognize it. :upset:

Sorry if this is a known issue, but I did a search, to no avail.

I can't believe people are happily booting above 500 on this board! :upset:

Edit: I am starting to suspect the OCZ RAM might not be friendly with P5B...

Iīm currently using a seagate 40gb pata as a bench hd with my P5B DLX+ E6400 and i can go 500fsb+ without problems.

In the last month & a half iīve had about 2-3 corruptions but couldnīt tell if it was for the pata drive or simply too much oc :p:

No probs here as well, Maxtor PATA + CDRW did not stop my P5B DLX from passing SPi32M @ 562MHz FSB. Something else must be off in your system or you simply pushing your RAM too far...

EDIT: Scratch that, I think your RAM is quite capable and should be doing just fine on P5B DLX. So I'd advise you to mess around with voltages (mainly vnb and vsb), and leave your RAM @ 8-4-4-4.0 - anything looser and you're doing a disservice to them

Thanks Bachus. This is killing me, and I have such limited time these days between work and GF, I have like a 12-hour window once a week to figger stuff out.

I got a lot more done when I was a single loser benching on Sat nites.

This is good RAM, but I thought I read OCZ was having Asus compatibility issues?

I think I'll be booting with an Ubuntu CD until I have this worked out.
