View Full Version : How did this Slip by.... Bad Axe 2 Available...

I remember when I first saw the BX2, I was amazed that it had 3 volts available to it right from bios...
however, seeing this persons post here...

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1745588&postcount=15

it shows only 2.8 volts.
however, thats still 2.8 volts :D

thing is... I am surprised theres been so little buzz about this board.
is it a dud, or are people just focusing on the Asus and Abit?

I've been wondering that myself. No one and I mean NO ONE cares about this board. I brought up the subject about a month ago and a splatter of replies, and then nothing. Weird...I guess those blue flame heatsinks need to be lit up with LED's and the board to cost $400 for anyone to care anymore. :(

No idea, I am kinda curious because I have gotten bored with this P5W64 and want something different. No holes in this damn asus board means no WC on the chipset :( I tried mounting my block but with only 2 hooks it's impossible to keep the block square against the chipset, tubing pushes it all over the place.

It looks like you have the original Bad Axe specs. listed, they are not the same for the Bad Axe 2 (Marvel 88SE6145 secondary SATA-RAID controller at 300 MB/s, Sigmatel 9274D):

I think that the last thing to consider when you want to buy a new mobo.:p: I like the price, a nice break from Asus' $300 and $400 heatpipe monsters.

I think people are bored of the 975 chipset, and most are interested in something new.

Yeah. I've gathered that... But there did used to be a 985 being bandied about and I've kindof been away from this for a little while (hence the crappy OC on my CPU) But I've been working hard so I can afford a stupidly expensive CPU lol.

I just test my XBX2 (retail version 503) mobo with my L629B E6600. So far 400X9 orthos LargeFFT stable @ 1.40v in bios, 1.37v in windows, using 1066 strap. The vFSB&vMCH at default, only change fsb to 400, increase Vcore to 1.40v, mem runs at 800MHz.

IMO, XBX2 is a great mobo. I do not need to do OC-Debug mod to overclock my E6600. The vDroop is much less than Asus P5WDG2 WS Pro. vDimm from 1.80v to 2.80v, FSB from 133 to 500 MHz.

Nice! Does the XBX2 allow you to set lower multiplier? I would like to know how high you can get the FSB with 1066 strap.

About vdroop, is it the same as the old XBX or further improved? I mean, comparing to unmodded Asus boards is like aiming below the belt.

No, I can't set lower multiplier unless X6800 used. Havn't try fsb higher than 400, but will test it this evening.

Yes, I think Kentsfield support (quad-core) may be what really distinguishes the Bad Axe 2 from the original:

im using e6400 and i would be sattisfied with 400FSB at 1033 strap. i need not to go higher
im afraid to get p5b deluxe because the board dies too easy. if you guys confirm that BAXE2 can do 400FSB 1066 strap easily and has no major issues (this board does well with micron d9 chips, right?)

breetai72

The board can definitely do 400MHz. I've run it up past 450MHz. The key to if it will hit 400 with the 1066 strap is the MCH. Nothing else. If you end up with a MCH that has good timings, you'll be able to hit it.

One suggestion. Make sure you have good air on the MCH if you increase it's voltage. I used a 40mm fan with wire ties on the heat sink. It works great and there is a fan header there to connect to. The ICH can use air too since V_Core MCH = V_Core ICH on these boards.

 Fixed potential issue where Fan speed stuck at 100%.
 Fixed issue where attempting to use the One Time Boot Menu
appeared to hang POST.
 Fixed issue where Recovery status screen is blank.

hasnt anyone tried it? or are there simply almost no owners of this board?

I need to pick a mobo within this week but dont know which one :( I wasnt happy with my P5W so I sold it already. I'm gonna put an E6700 ES on there with SS. Would 1.6v on the CPU of the BX2 be enough to get the max potential? Cause prefer not to voltmod.

i'm using this bios, it's really a nice board

1.6v is kinda low but at least, vdroop is excellent on this board :)

Vdroop is excellent ?

With my QX6700 @ quadprime i have a vdroop of 0.06V.
1.6V in Bios gives me 1.54V measured @ quadprime.;)

So THATS how you meassure vdroop... Well, as long as you are happy with it then why not, but no need to post so obviously wrong "results".

its not that it cant.
its just a feature they choose to not put in the bios.
when they do it from bios, all they are doing is manipulating EIST.

if you wanna unlock the multiplier yourself, run crystal CPUID, and make sure EIST is enabled from the bios.
then you can change the Multiplier from within windows.
its better then nothing. ;)

Is there a soft to Oc on Windows ?

... you can change the Multiplier from within Windows.

Thanks for the detailed information.

I actually run a hacked version of Apple's OS X on my machines, so these types of Windows based overclocking tools are not directly usable by me.

But I am starting to think about trying to use them by running Windows virtually. Otherwise, I think it may be time for me to start writing some overclocking software for OS X. We need someting like ClockGen and CPU-Z anyways, and even have problems reading CPU temperatures.

Yes, ClockGen works on some motherboards:

Nah, clockgen doesn't have my ICS for the badaxe rev 305. maybe it works for the XBX2 though. my ICS is 954108. Intel does have the Intel Desktop Control Center. It lets you tweak FSB, vCore, vDimm, etc...

Just a quick update:

Here is a qoute from one of my previous posts:

4*900 = 3.6GHz at 1.40v Orthos stable for 4+ hours:toast:
core temp 0.94 reads the core temperature around 63~67C at lowest speed of TT120.:)

The last time I checked it was 8+ hours Orthos:)
