anyone everhit 3 ghz without prommies, or water cooling?
ahh I mean is it possible?
and I mean air cooled! anyway in hell that it would be possible
maybe with help of a heatpipe?
or is 3ghz to hot to handle due to electron migration without xtreme cooling
just asking

the simple answer. no.

on the fastest amd;s their clock is only 2.1gig... 900mhz on air is pushing it.

branted ive done 700mhz on air but thats a 2100 B. when my new ram comes we'll see if i cant make it 800. so it *MIGHT* be possible but i highly doubt it.

Id say know....no current air cooler would be up to the job

Definately not with current cpus...3ghz STABLE is still rare with a prommie so not much of a chance on air

CCW I noticed you have a new avatar, very stylish :)

3GHz might be possable with a super-chip, but most of the time 2.5-2.7GHz is the highest they'll go without other cooling methods.

maybe next year...

for now, you can consider it close enough to impossible to be impossible. for one, there is no chip that will even nearly do 3 GHz even if you could keep it down to room temp (and you know its going to be higher than that)
secondly, you will need more voltage, at least around 2 volts, and you have no idea how much heat these things put out at 3 GHz and 2 volts ... I will go as far as saying you cant even get close to 3 GHz on watercooling

Maybe when AMD uses SOI on these chips....

so what's the max ppl have been hitting on air? total confirmed max stable I'm talking 3d mark stable!!
personally I don't call it stable till I can run prime 95 for at least 3 hours without it throwing up on me

one guy in sweden has a dlt3c jiuhb 1700+ @ 2700mhz @ 1.9v

Here's a screen shot of my 0248 2100+ running cold ducted air into a sk7/Vantec 80+ cfm..didn't last long!

http://members.aol.com:/rmars15669/images/2756MHz.jpg

ran stable at 13*200..but with summer temps coming I've dropped it to 2548. Got a little week 8 1700+ running 2.5G at 1.8vre going to see if I can run it passive 1.10~1.30vre.
A big Hello..to everybody here..I'm new!

I have my fingers crossed hoping that before they quit making the 32's we'll see an air cooled 3G. There's hope as long as they keep those new steppings coming.

whoever said SOI is thinking along the correct lines...

On air, i'd expect up to 2.5ghz, depending on how good ur air cooler and chip are.

That's a hell of a clock on air Smoker, Welcome to Xtreme! :toast:

Ever hear of folding??? :D:D

Before ya bash me on that one...

I'm on air over 2.3G 2100+POS. I just need a better PS.

There's still life in pictures. And headroom in the XP.

LOL Smoker... that's the cooling technique I prefer too... :D

I had a screeny at 2.8 but I can't seem to find it?

I'm currently moving to water/TEC cooling and I can't wait to see how low I'll be able to go next winter. :am:

There's still life in pictures. And headroom in the XP. Make it run at 3GHz on air and we'll talk about it! IMHO We'll never see a xp running at that speed, maybe a barton and even so i'm not too sure. A 3GHz Xp will compete with the barton and with the forthcoming athlon64 and amd doesn't want that. It's goal is to compete with Intel not with himself.

I think we're seeing the limits of the current XP architecture right now, and as antipop mentions, AMD has no incentive to try and make it go any further.

So if we ever see an XP running 3ghz on air...it will be a freak chip that was touched by the hands of the overclocking gods...not something we can ever expect to see with any regularity.

Thanks.. for the Welcome Brainstorm and Royal Oaks and yeah I've heard of folding..LOL. Jeff..nice clock :) I "think" I could have got 2.8G but didn't have the guts to go higher on the vre as a buddy of mine from LC/lostcircuits.com had just killed one at 2.0vre. Matter of fact I hosed the OS at 2678MHz/2.0vre LOL.

As for hitting 3G on air.. right now..it would take a freak chip in the hands of a very skilled clocker as Brainstorm et al said
