 So I'm just wondering what I can get for around $250.
What would be the best combination of a mobo and cpu for
OCing? And where can I order them for the best price? And how I
can I be sure about the model numbers, date codes, stepping
codes--whatever? Oh and, what cpu cooler should I get?
Currently I have a 2200+, K7S5A pro mobo, 512 mb pc2100
Crucial, GeForce 3. And if I ever decide to get a new video card,
should I go with ATI or NVIDIA? Thanks! ~Lee

head over to www.excaliberpc.com, and grab a 1700+ and nf7s rev2 package.

The best stepping is a dlt3c wmpw between week 6 and 10.

I suppose the current favorites are:

NF7-S v2.0
1700+ t-bred b (DLT3C 0310 WPMW)
2x256 of TwinMos PC3200 with Winbond bh-5 chips
SLK-900 HS with some high powered variable speed fan

Haven't added up the price, but it probably a bit more than your $250. That's a tough number to hit for good mobo, cpu, ram and HS. You can get the guaranteed versions and stepping of the motherboard and CPU at excaliberpc. The best place for that memory is MemoryX (assuming you live in the states) and the HS can be had at several places (SVC comes to mind).

CPU Heatsink Thermalright SLK-800 Heatsink

Memory 256MB Twinmos PC3200 (x2) $124 memoryX
CPU Fan Thermaltake SMART CASE FAN II or Thermaltake SMART CASE FAN II WITH “COOLMOD” $15
or
$18 NewEgg

I can get all this stuff (with the exception of the Memory) for
about $250. Would I still somehow be able to OC the CPU up
to around 2.2ghz with my Crucial 512mb pc2100 chip?? Orrr, do I have to get the Twinmos? Thanks! ~Lee

Yeah, you can still manage that overclock, you just couldn't run as high a FSB. Do you know how high the Crucial will go? Also, is that one stick or two? If it's only one stick, you'll be losing a bit of performance because you'll be missing out on NF7-S's ability to run two sticks of memory dual channel.

BTW, like Major said, welcome to Xtreme! :toast:

I have no idea. Someone told me it OCed ok, but I don't know by how much. And it's only one stick, too. I'll plan on getting some new memory in a couple of months. ;)

Hey, thanks for the welcome! buuut, I've actually been here before (couple of months ago, I guess)! :p ...under the name of Seekenest, I believe. boy did I do a terrible job coming up with that one, doesn't even make sense. :D So, I was watching the Jetsons the other day, and with Spacely's Sprockets and all, I thought, hey Sprocket, that just might work! ;)

Ok, so TwinMos is what I should keep in mind. I don't think I've heard of it before. How does it compare to that fast Corsair stuff?

guess that's about it. is there anything else I should keep in mind? any other suggestions? thanks! :toast:

A lot of benchamrks show it performs on par with Corsair, for the price of twinMOS, you cant beat it!

Whelp, thanks everyone! Looks like I just might be upgrading soon! :D

Is there a page with a bunch of those WCPUID cpu status screenshots and the like with systems using the stuff I'll most likely be upgrading to? the 1700+ t-bred b (DLT3C 0310 WPMW) being aircooled with something like the slk 800? thanks!

God bless!
