What's up with this ??

New chipsets from Nvidia ??
"PS. I strongly do not think that I should remind you to keep your eyes open when buying a mainboard powered by either nForce2 Ultra 400 or nForce2 400 after all those pseudo-new chipsets from VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems."
Heh, lol :D

i think those are the 400MHz FSB tested chipsets. probably just new names for the same old thing.

If you read the earlier new article they linked to, you will notice that the nForce2 400 is a new single channel memory controller chipset for the low end of the market. I think the nForce2 Ultra 400 is just nVidia's name for its nForce2 chipset that officially supports 200mhz fsb Bartons.

ah, i seem to recall reading about that now.
Why are they releasing a single channel DDR board for lower end? its not as if current NF2s are expensive, very reasonable proces for the boards

They're still not cheap when you compare them to SIS or VIA low end chips. nVidia just wants to address a market segment that they are missing out on currently.
Spose, VIA and SIS have boards out for -£50 whereas all NF2s are roudna bout £100

This reminds me too much of Nvidias graphics line up. In order to cover all of the market, they make all sorts of gutted revisions of other gutted revisions (Riva tnt2->tnt2 m64->vanta->vanta lt) (geforce 2 gts->geforce2 mx -> geforce2 mx 200) and on and on and on...
It makes sense for making money, but I would have to ask why they gut everything. Why not just come out with something newer and better (optimized at least) and price drop the old chips?

Eventually they do. But they need cheaper ones with the right "checklist" of features for the OEMs.

lol like the GeForce FX 5200, its £75 has core/mem of 250/200 (400)
only good thing is directx 9.0 support on it

nvidia isn't the only company that does this. ATI and Intel have done it as well.
anyway, it doesn't really matter if Nvidia makes a single channel Nforce2 board. 80% of those boards will probably end up in HPs or Compaqs.

Last I checked, HP and Compaq still used AMD 761's.
Are they even using 2700 yet?

i've got a coworker with an HP, it's using a Nforce1 motherboard.
i'm sure someone will eventually use a Nforce2 board with the IGP for a midrange system.
Cheapskates, thats why I would never buy a computer, "Enjoy your new Pentium 4 Sir, the GeForce 2 MX will not bottleneck your system at all, neither will the SD-RAM"

but the people buying those computers would probably never notice the difference. thats why you can get a $499 P4 2.53GHz system.
My boss does a similar thing though. A family walked into the shop to buy a gaming machine....he quite happily told them the GeForce 4 MX420 (250/166) would be adequate to play every game already out (crap) and every game this year (LMAO) and every gamer next year (this is one xtreme card), its lack of knowledge that allows people to fal lfor it, with this card he put SD-RAM and a XP2200+ :D

well, some people actually don't know that a GF4MX = GF2. this includes some of the people selling the components unfortunatly.

Tad unfair if you ask me, cause if that person finds out that the GF4 he was sold is infact crap, then chances are he won't return to the same shop. So in all respects there is a chance the shop will lose out of future business.

You have to admit that ati does the best job in cripling cards. They sell you 9700p's for $140 dollars. All you need is a XXXkB file and a bios flash LOL.... You can't beat the 9500 np.
My boss on the other hand buys those crap computers and won't be persuaded by me to build him a balanced one. The gateway p4 2.53's are complete crap. No 2.53ghz comp should be taht slow.

well i say it too him but im 15 so it doesnt matter! i reckon we shouldve been using DDR a long time a go, we only started putting it in systems a few weeks back when the prices on it fell and went cheaper than SD

CCW your boss sounds like a cheap bastard ! :)
Sounds like he's thinking short term buisness. If he were a good salesman the customer would have been leaving the store with atleast a 9500pro and NF2 mb.

he could be cheap, but he probably doesn't know the difference either.
i worked in retail for a couple of years, and the people buying the products for the store generally don't know much about them. the people that are selling the products usually get their info from the buyers. then the customer gets screwed.
i guess we should all just consider ourselves lucky, we don't need to ask a salesperson "which is the best?"
if i sell a PC there...i try to get an NF2 in it, unless they dont need it of course

yeah, i always had a hard time working in sales. people here never want to spend the extra money for a better product.

This is exactly what compelled me to learn how to build my own systems, I bought a new system from the local PC store; guy tells me “free upgrades for a year, you only pay for parts”, two months later I asked him to upgrade my CPU; he says “this MB in not upgradable”.
Local library here I come, now I build my own, and help everyone I can.........and this guy "is out of buisness”!
Thats why most people do, its not hard and once youve done one, you can do a million! I started to learn by ripping apart 486s :D
