Truely awesome FCG... I keep hearing rumors that the C2Quad's won't be able to run on the 965/975 boards only upcoming bearlake and newer , is this just a bogus rumor? I noticed that you're running the Xeon on a P965 which would debunk this rumor I've heard, or is the Xeon setup to run differently than the C2Quad?
Great results I might add, I want one of these NOW. Lemme know if you put any up for sale :)

I am kinda surprised how quick we reached quad core cpu's. I remeber dual core starting only late last year. Very impressed!

Anyone know the price tag on it?
irev210
11-04-2006, 10:30 PM
not to hi-jack his thread but-
1) arctic cleaner 1+2=clean
2) the bottleneck for performance will not be ram. The bottlenecks will be a) how big of a cooler you have b) how high of a FSB you can run since xeon x3220 is locked at 9x
3) The pricetag is set at 850 in lots of 1000, the more popular x3210 will be priced in the 600 dollar range.

I wonder if a s771 clt xeon could work in a 775 board? ;o
Pretty much identical chips, maybe theres a pin mod to make it work.
thunderstruck!

There seem to be two different batches of IHSs. One appears slightly taller with very defined edges. The second type, found on this CPU, has very rounded edges and corners. This one was pretty flat but still could have been better.
You know how important I have been saying it is to work clean. Cleaning an IHS and heatsink mounting base properly (whatever it may be) is absolutely vital to good temps.
kris, in your opinion do you think the mem bandwidth will be a bottlneck?
Bottleneck for what? More performance gains? Absolutely not, this CPU continues to scale as I add more speed. Just like Conroe, the 4MB shared L2 cache per dual-core is more than adequate in keeping the cores fed with data.
Estimated price?
Expect retail to be about $890/processor.

Absolutely not. The keys on a S771 CPU are rotated 90* from those on a S775 CPU. They are NOT compatable and as such Intel has taken appropriate design measures to ensure that you don't try to force a S771 CPU into a socket it wasn't made to work in. This Xeon is S775.

How does temp compare to QX series. I know the QX's are a bit hotter than C2D. Can you do a comparision on those please

3DMark06 CPU score with 4 cores @ 3.6Ghz (450x8) = 5400 points
it's in one of the screen shots in the second post.

oh come on Revv... i know you read what he said about the 771 fitting into a 775
I'm a 3d artist, and like alot of 3d artist out there, these quadcores are creating a lot of interest. So far I've seen mostly benching on applications that don't seem to be setup to fully utilise these processors.
I've also been lead to believe today that real world performance isn't much to write home about.
I would love to see some 3d application benchmarks/renders done on these, utilising all four cores. As sierra_bound requested, cinebench would be a good start. Specifically I would be interested in the render time for final part of the bench mark test.
A long shot, but there's also demo of Lightwave 9, if any of you are interested in some further benching.

Nope, should run just fine with the right bios. Look to upgrade to Bearlake with the upcoming 45nm procs, Penryn, Wolfdale, etc., which according to my "sources" will be later rather than sooner. Fabs 32 (Ocotillo) and 25 (Israel) are a little behind schedule, so D1D will be the sole producer of 45nm for a while.
If my motherboard support a kentsfield a xeon will work too?

These uniprocessor Xeons look to be quite the overclocker, but at the same time it's quite annoying Intel has gone this route. It seems very odd that to get the best overclocking CPU, you have to go with a multiplier locked non-Extreme CPU. The Extreme Editions are supposed to be the best that Intel can offer in terms of yield, combined with an unlocked multiplier to provide the best overclocked performance available. It seems the desktop Extreme Edition Kentsfield is binned a cut (or more) below the desktop quad core Xeon. This inferior binning of the QX6700 could easily make it far less attractive to some people, even with the unlocked multiplier, especially when boards are flirting with 450-500MHz FSB with some reliability.
My $0.02...;)

Don't the Quadcore S775 Xeons have the fsb wall as normal Kentsfields do?

01-09-2007, 06:38 AM
Has anyone seen evidence that these xeons OC more than the regular desktop counterparts? Or is it just people who buy the xeons happen to have better cooling systems on average and are pushing the limit on their procs?
lutjens
01-09-2007, 07:37 AM
I think there are too few overclocked X3220s to be able to draw any conclusions from the overclocking results seen so far, but those results are promising to say the least. I haven't seen too many retail Kentsfields do as well. My last post was a hope that Intel bins the top speed grades of the Xeon and the Extreme the same, as binning the Xeon higher would cause the Extreme to lose a lot of its luster.

I have the same X3220 running at 400x9 1.45 Vcore 24/7 fully loaded with 4 instances of WCG. Stock Tuniq Tower 120 keeping Coretemp readings just under 70C in 20C ambient. Board is unmodded P5B Dlx with 2x1G GSkill 6400 HZ. The chip will go higher with more Vcore, once the WC gear is mounted.

Could someone from XS please do a full report laying out what you can link to in the forums. I like Freecable guys link to his Site.
I don't understand why he can't link to it. Its no differant than linking to any site.
Look at the watercooling section seems to be a lot of product promotions there by people who manufactore the products.
So it would be nice if the rules on this were explained in a Thread . More completely than whats stated in the rules thread.
