Dumb question but thought I'd ask if for some strange reason I need to reformat. I ordered a Opteron 170 to replace my A64 3000+, will I need to reformat or will Windows play nice? I've upgraded same socket single core CPUs in the past with no problem but never a single core to dual core.

Windows should continue to run fine since you're only changing the processor. I've experienced issues with Windows getting corrupt only when I upgraded CPU + board or memory.

it should be ok as windows recognizes a new processor and installs the necessary drivers.

You could need a dual core patch, but I have no clue if that bug is still around.

Only one real way to find out, pop out the old and in with the new. I'll go ahead and backup important stuff before hand if Windows doesn't play well. Thanks for the responses guys.

you will probably have to do a repair install in the very least...the HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer) is different for a dualcore than a singlecore.

It installed fine, no repairs or formats. Now to see if it was worth the money.

just install the patch and you should be all good.
Once you start seriously multi-tasking, you'll start to see some wonderful improvements. Although in some cases, you'll never truly start to use the second core and it'll be a waste

I came across a nice app, ConvertXtoDVD. I've been using it to burn DVDs from my HTPC MPEG recordings and it's nice. I used to have to jump through hoops to get a file on DVD format without making a coaster. I can't find any info but I am really hoping that program is multithreaded. If it is then then that one program justifies the purchase for me.

The first thing I did when Windows booted was installed the X2 driver and dual core optimizer patch.

there is a really easy way to find out.
First open that application.
Then ctrl-shift-esc
right click the application, then select "Go to Process"
the just look at the thread count
