View Full Version : HELP - Entire PC stuttering after bootup!

I wasn't quite sure where to post this since I'm actually not sure what's going on or what the problem is. Here's the deal:

Sometimes, let's say...every 2-3 weeks, when I start my PC, it is like the entire thing is stuttering. There is one second of fine, one second of pause, one second of fine, etc., like clockwork. Everything seems to run fine, I don't get any errors, just the stuttering. I can restart and everything is fine again. I can look in the Task Manager, and the processor says about 20% load. None of the processes show any signs of using the CPU except the system-IDLE one at 99 (as it should be for idling, I presume). Nothing is hogging memory. I have ran orthos and memtest for over 10 hours with no errors on my OC (idle temp is around 27C, load under orthos is about 52C). This is on a fresh install of Windows (that I just did last night), but the issue also happened before on my old install.

And that's it. I'm absolutely stumped as to what the deal is. The problem occurs so infrequently and inconsistantly that I am unable to reproduce it to effectively troubleshoot it...I just have to wait until it happens again, which like I said is about every 2-3 weeks. If anyone has any input as to what is going on or what I can do, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if this is the wrong place to post this feel free to move it! Thanks!

On a different PC configuration?

Usually this kind of problems are "Screen Related" - try updating your monitor driver, if there was a freeze or happened more often this problems would be security related (Malware).

PS.I see you have a MAXTOR HDD - you could add this to the possible problems list.

On the same system I have now. My previous Windows install got corrupted, so I formatted and reinstalled. I thought this issue was related to my corrupt install, but it happened again, so I don't know. I have been thinking it might be the hard drive, but I'm not too sure how to go about troubleshooting it, since I haven't been getting any other errors. That fact that I can go long periods of time without this happening is what is getting me.

Do your lights dim or flicker when you turn on your PC? How clean is your electricity?

Try PowerMax 4.23 (http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware%20Downl oads%2FAll%20Downloads&downloadID=22) to test your Maxtor HDD, Maviryk has a point there whit electricity - do you have any problems whit it?

Oh Noes! Powermax! *flashbacks :slobber: passes out*.....anyway don't go with Maxtor, i just RMAed one of their drives because it wouldn't be detected on boot sometimes, until even Powermax couldn't detect it so i knew it was dead :( Funny thing is it passed the test before lol

I tried running the PowerMax thing, but unfortunately it wouldn't detect my drive because it's SATA. I have ran a checkdisk with "scan for bad sectors" and it came out clean even on my previous install.

As for my electricity, it seems clean as far as I know...the only time I've noticed anything odd is sometimes when I turn on my 30" CRT HDTV, my floor lamp will quickly dim once, ever so slighty, but I think it's fine if it does that. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between when I get the stutters and having more stuff powered in my house...anyway, wouldn't the problem be more frequent or consistant if it was my electricity?
