Here's a wierd one. Out of nowhere on a fresh reboot this morning, I get the message "administrator has prohibited access to cd/dvd rom drives." In exporer all my cd/dvd and usb drives are inaccessible and have little red/circle/slash ("NO") sign on them.

I always run up to date AV and Spywar apps. And everything comes up clean.

The only recent apps changed in the last two days was the removal of the EA Auto Downloader that installed came with a game I installed last weekend.

Any ideas? Restore does not work.

check account privileges for "administrator"

(Please tell me that Administrator is the actually login)

could be a group policy setting gone awry, or a rootkit. Google "group policy" "disable cd drive" and do the steps to enable it.

uninstall all your cd-rom drives in device-manager (right-click, uninstall)
then reboot.

if not, check in gpedit.msc if you have a custom adm template disabling your drives (http://www.petri.co.il/disable_usb_disks_with_gpo.htm)

I would also uninstall any cd-rom emulator software like daemon tools or clone CD.

I'm logged in as admin.

Thanks, I'll look for something like that.

Tried this but no joy.

Another good lead. I'll check it out.

None running.

Thanks for the tips.

Update:

I found a partial fix.

I was unable to do about anything as admin. System restore would not work.

Thinking it had something to do with Admin rights, I reviewed my services and noted Admin Works X6 running. Never even heard of this program before. I found the awSwerv.exe file under Program/Intel/IDU which is the Intel desktop utilities folder that installs when you load the Intel Desktop Utility. It included an Admin Works folder with the awSwerv.exe app.

I disabled the service, then uninstalled the Intel Desktop Utilities.

After a disable and reboot, the service is gone.

Access was restored.

The only issue is that the Drive icons are now gone. I get the generic missing file type icon. So, I know I do not have a clean fix here.

Very odd. I have no idea how the Admin Works was even installed.

I came across this page through a Google search in my desperation to solve this issue! I did as suggested, uninstalling the Intel Utilities, and as predicted lost the icons. But I then reinstalled the Intel Utilities and everything was back to normal. Thanks very much to everyone, I would never have figured that out on my own.
