View Full Version : Annoying Home Network Problem

Only recently I started getting this problem:
At night, or during the day, whenever I'm away from the computer for extended periods of time, my connection to the internet will drop; the icon will still show "connected", but in reality, I can't access anything, I need to disable/renable the wireless adaptar, or use the window's "repair" function. (Asus P5WDH wireless + D-link router).
The weirdest part is WHEN it likes to crash. It's noticable when I'm downloading a torrent, and it'll let it fully download, and then disable when I'm sleeping or away (guess how my share ratio does with this  ).
Suggestions?
I'd like to add that it's pretty much like a disconnection, but it doesn't restore the connection.

Today I woke up and it had a red X thru it..bit of an improvement I suppose, but still dropping off.

Have you checked your DHCP lease time from your router? Could be your Internet connection is just fine; but, your rig is losing it's IP information. Just a thought.

Is your router overheating?
I know its more likely to do this when your using it heavily, but sometimes mine goes loopy when its been getting too hot.

Not sure how to do this :/ (D-link DWG 624)

It gets hot, so does my modem, but until recently this wasn't a problem, so I can't see the heat being a factor :/ I'll see though.

That's what I thought at first, so I only seed say 2 torrents at a time, max 50 connections....and generally I don't get up to 50, so I dunno :/

It's usually some sort of option under a DHCP tab. I'm not familiar with Dlink, though.

To check your DHCP lease time, go to a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /all
Your DHCP lease time is listed in there around the bottom, as well as when it expires.
I doubt this would be it though, because Windows issues a DHCPRequest packet to your router when 1/2 the time is passed (which is also one of the packets what's used when you're getting an IP in the first place)... so unless your router is refusing to allow you to use DHCP after assigning you an IP address via DHCP that wouldn't quite do it.
I'm not sure I could comment on what the problem could be though, aside from possibly your router dying.

ive just fixed a couple of problems like this. the first was a faulty wireless adapter that was drawing too much current and overheating/shutting down. the next was caused by a faulty power connection to a router causing the network connection to dropout on one side of the router. you need to eliminate the possibilities by changing out your router first and see if you get the problem again (try this for a week by swapping your router with a friends, if he gets the problem instead - voila, theres your problem) if this doesnt solve the issue - id suggest your wireless adapter on your board is kaput. hope this helps

Manually set your IP and disable DHCP

@Serra; Checked, my DHCP is actually disabled. My router is set for a 1 week lease time.
@nn_step: IP is manually configured, and DHCP is disabled on my current computer, does it need to be disabled on the router?

No, you don't have to disable the DHCP server function on your router unless you're getting a conflict that states a duplicate IP address exists on your network (which Windows will alert you about). It's just an optional service there for your convenience.

hmmm. I have a strange Idea, enable DHCP on your computer and keep DHCP active on your router. seems weird but there is a chance.

obligatory "wired FTW" ;)
Try another wireless card or router if you can. Try and find the culprit.

Check to make sure your computer isn't set to power off that device after a certain period of time. You can find this on the "Power Management" tab of the adapter in Device Manager.

Will try the DHCP tonight...
@Sparky, hard to try another card, I have no free PCI slot with the water cooling :/
@Soulburner - It's set for "CAM" other options being FAST_PSP and MAX_PSP

I don't think you are in the same place. Right click your network adapter in device manager, and go to Properties. Then look on the Power Management tab.

No, I am, there is no Power Management Tab, so I went in advanced, where there's a property list, Power Management is there with the options I said.

Just an idea...
Also I used to have the same problem, but I never figured out what it was. It really sucked while playing online games. When I finally would get my connection back i'd log into the game, dead. I always wondered if the router/modem were getting hot, or if I had a problem with the lines somewhere, it was an older house.

Well, I know on wireless to fix the sort of "lag spike/dcs" you disable window's wireless zero config from the services...this is different than that though :/

Well nothing worked...but this is weird...this happens only when Azureus is open, my connection to my router drops...I tried today by keeping Azureus up when I'm actually here, and the connection drops too...what the hell? It's been working fine up until recently.
Edit: And only when uploading....

Ugh, still having the problem. I was checking thru the router's logs and noticed that it kept losing the PPoE connection, could this be causing it? I assumed it'd just reconnect and then all would be good.

Is "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" or whatever it is called option disabled?

Have you not yet tried connecting to another router (ie. your neighbors) and seeing if that happens then as well? Because it could very well be the router by the sounds of it.
