Mouse pad, time for a change

What're some of your recommendations? Currently have the fUnc 1030, and like the fast surface....wish it were faster, actually.

Looking to change cause I want a 1-piece and maybe slightly larger (space is an issue :()....and just a new one in general, this one's served me well for a few years but has a few gashes in it. Also looking for it to be a quiet pad, very fast (I don't think I can reiterate this enough)....for example, on the smooth/slow side of the fUnc, things can get pretty loud. Asthetically, the less bling, the better....simple and understated :)

I'm not really a gamer, but I've always got several machines around being worked on (either constantly changing my configs or building/fixing friend&family boxes) so theres usually a number of mice in various places on my desk which also happens to suck as a mousing surface and the keyboard tends to slide/fall more than I care for, and I wont even mention ashtrays and beverages :0 I hear the surface material is pretty quick too

edit: corepad also offer a 'wax' to improve performance

Bottom site is all rubber, then a thin slice of stainless steel coated with teflon. And the teflon pads under my Logitech G5 are great on the surface. (Teflon tape is included also).
It's not cheap, but I tried like 3 other mouse pads before this one (ones that were supposed to be good) and they don't come near this one.
It's also very durable.

Well I usually recommend the steelpad Qck+ but it's cloth. Slower but more accurate, worth switching IMO. Lower sensitivity means more room though. steel S&S is the best hard surface but very loud, at least with my MX510. Not as loud with my copperhead. Stick with func I guess, get the rough surface one that's not double sided.

Hmmmm, thanks for the recs, but I think AFI's right.....gotta stick with the fUnc pad. Though I've never seen the non-double sided one?

Steel is too loud....the Corepad is WAAAAYYYYY too slow (an air-hockey table [turned on] would be ideal).

AFI, is the non-double sided one a 1-piece?

14" wide, and that's the small version. My brother has one and it's insanely fast with his diamondback.

Also, look into hyperglide mouse feet. They slide quite well ;) I need to order a new set. Used some on my old copperhead before I RMA'd it and I had the mobility of a hard pad with the control and size of a cloth.

What's wrong with dual surface pads? In my opinion it's a very nice feature.
I have a dual surface SteelPad 4D and been really satisfied with it. The included teflon tapes reduce noise in the "hard" surface by a great margin also. :)
I have also a SteelPad QcK at my second rig and it's very nice for a cloth pad.

Steelpad 5L, although I haven't had any experience with it, apparently it's dead fast with the Razer CH in particular, but has no problem with accuracy. Best used for laser mice though...if that's a problem.

14" is a little wide, but I can rotate it if it's too wide. The weird shape isn't too extreme either, still fairly square, which is good.

As for a custom air hockey table for mousing.....hmmm, maybe actually, not for school though, it'd be something I do just for kicks, but I definitely like the idea. :)

Dual surface isn't a bad thing if one surface is rediculously fast and other surface is meant to grip the table :p: The problem with dual surface is that it means you need a 2nd grip piece, and two pieces isn't something I want, nor is a flexible pad.

Anyway, that pad looks perfect (other than the size/irregular shape, but those are no biggies) AFI, thanks.

Do you notice that much of a difference between pads? What do you guys look for in them anyhow? What differenciates a good one from a bad one?

There are lots of differences between cheap and expensive mousepads. When comparing my previous mousepad the Alsop steelpad it was ok but the mouse doesn't glide as well it does with my S&S. Also this S&S is more accurate and its slimmer so it doesn't strain your hand as much as a thicker mousepad would. Other small bonuses are included glidepads for the mouse so there are minimum restriction between the mouse and the pad and these better mousepads tend to be bigger so you have more room to move your mouse.
