View Full Version : 8meg broadband 2 meg downloads

Hi, can someone point me to a site where i can actually use an 8mb download speed. I've just switched from BT 2meg to Plusnet 8meg unlimited. Very happy with the switch especially the price but what i've found is that no matter where i'm downloading from the most i ever get is around 200kbs. I'm aware that some site due to server configuration can set the max download speed and bandwidth used etc, but surely there must be some site what i can actually see my 8meg line maxing out. Its just really for my own satifaction to see it run at 8 meg. The thing is if 99% of all downloads etc are from 2meg limited sites whats the point of 8meg or faster if your not downloading the world?

Try from ATI. I usually get max speed out of the 10mb here. On my BT line I struggle to get over 300kb/sec even though its supposed to be between 3.8 and 5meg.....couldnt get 8 as too far away from exchange.

If not get a usenet account and watch a DVD come down in just over an hour !!

Microsoft are usually good as well.

wow you must have a 16mb pipe to get 2048kb/sec....or 2mb a sec....lol only teasing. If you use firefox its starts before you choose the location so it will get a faster speed than it actually it.

You need to convert your bits to bytes...

8 megabit connection / 8 = 1000 kilobyte per second (kbps) (theorically)

Depending on distance, you prolly will never get more than 800 kbps...

The point is the upload spped, at least you can send people files at there max download speed.

If you are on adsl max (ie over a BT line) then it takes 10 days on average before you will see the full rate from your line getting switched.

Somtimes people do see the full rate earlier though

If you are on the Plusnet LLU style this should be at full rate straight away.

The nvidia site is good to see if you are getting the full rate as i always get about 760kbps to 800kbps from them.

go to freedownloadmanager.com and use that, it can increase your download speeds by powers of 10, and best of all it's free and no ads

i've gotten my 7mbps down/384kbps up running at over 1mb/sec downloading - this was kinda rare though, mostly it is like 600-800kb/sec

DownThemAll for firefox gets amazing speeds on larger files, and you can pause and resume much better than the built in manager.

It is not your fault. It depends on local servers, plus their transfer speeds. If nobody downloads something from their servers, you would get a full speed. ;)
