Your question is useless since you don't say what you do with the box.

I have 4 GB in most machine, more in some.

For my general purpose server 4 GB is a must. There is a whole lot of filesystem activity going on, large videos being mangled, my Web browser stays up for weeks in a row and grows into gigabyte regions, I read a lot of forums and postings with a pentazillion of pictures are common etc.

Stupid question to begin with. We can't answer it if we don't know what you are using it for. If you are playing pong all day then how could you possibly benefit from that.

ya even after playing BF2 for more than 6hours in a row on a server whcih loads a new map every round 2gb is enough
