let me tell you a tale of two machines...

One is a Pentium IV 2.66ghz Prescott with an eVGA GeForce FX5500.. what a pitiful card.. indeed, indeed...

Another is an AMD64 3200+ Venice with an eVGA GeForce 7600GT.. what a bliss machine.. indeed, indeed...

But woe is me this tale I tell.. I shall not tell but show!

These are screen shots from the pitiful GeForce FX5500.. though they may be but a slide show.. they are damn pretty!

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/7406/dedust20001jp0.jpg

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/488/dedust20003qt2.jpg

Now, let me show you my woe.. for the three following shots are from my GeForce 7600GT..

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/4792/dedust20000sb4.jpg

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9442/dedust20001pt3.jpg

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/8691/dedust20003hi8.jpg

Both machines run at 1280x1024 res with 16x AF... drivers are up to date.. both machines have always displayed it this way... only diff is the FX5500 runs in DX8..

so what gives? why would this older card put out way better looking visuals?

Anistrophic

lol, I'm gonna be picky and point out that it is spelled: Anisotropic

And the issue i see appears to be mipmap related? Whats the mipmap quality set too?

Easy. AMD sucks :)

Seriously, you want to locate the xml file storing the NVidia-settings in the Windows installation. I forgot the name, but it was pretty obvious.

Then, save both and copy one over the other and see whether that makes the differences disappear.

Haha, of coarse! :P

I bought this AMD long before conroe came out, so no regrets. (it beats the crap out of that 2.66ghz prescott in terms of performance :P)

ok, i'm searching my hard drive for it now.

I did a search for .xml files... the only one that seems remotely like what I might be looking for is nvapps.xml.. and it just holds the settings I configured for specific games in the nvidia control panel....

Well - so what diff(1) telling about the settings for the two computers.

Which game is it anyway?

I seriously HOPE you are joking  :slap: I have an AMD CPU and that exact same spot looks much better than it does on his AMD with the 7600GT. Yeah my CPU is faster but the major difference is GPU (I have a X1900XT). So no I don't think it is CPU related ;)

would you mind posting a screenshot of that location on your x1900xt with the AF cranked up to 16x for me?

It's also worth noting that all the 7600GT pics in this thread have AA enabled, and we all know that FSAA *can* have a blurring effect on the overall scene especially in the distance. The FX5500 screens have no AA enabled.

Yes, that is at high quality.

I tried that before I even posted... lemme show ya.

All shots below still run with 16AF.

'mat_picmip 0' looks the best. Find out what its set to and change it to 0.

It was already set to 0. anyway... can someone with an ATi card take a screen shot for me or what?

So what happened when you copied the xml file over?

It did not resolve it. I have determined this issue is based soley on the hardware. It uses the exact same driver version as the FX5500 did. This is why I would love a screenshot showing off the bombsite from an ati x1900 series card..... do these people not realize they may bring someone to the side of ATi by doing so?...

I'd also like to see a 7800GTX.

Makes you wonder whether they saved a couple bucks in what was not the high end at the time.

I have a few friends with these 7 series.. one has a 7800GTX, and another has a 7900GT KO.

The one with the 7800GTX says it looks just like mine, and as for the 7900GT KO, I saw it with my own eyes. I'm convinced the 7 series just has plain crappy AF support.

you said the fx5500 was running directx8 and the 7600gt running dx9?

well, then the 7600 will give you softer textures, since it isnt real how sharp the textures are with the 5500.

at an angle this should look a bit softer. set the 5500 to dx9 and then take screenshots.
