My system has been working fine for a couple months now, its an overclocked PD950 and it ran fine. Today I turned on my comp and I smelled something burning and it was a very strong smell. I quicky turned the system off and inspected it and decided everything was fine. When i rebooted, the system got into windows and ran normally however, the nVIdia drivers reported that my 6800 GS is not getting enough power and it has been underclocked to avoid damage. I tried 3 different PCI-E power cables and the problem presists. I have an Antec TruePower 480 Watt so I doubt its my PSU.

inspect the card thoroughly for damage. it soudns as if the card's power supply might have been damaged into open-circuiting.

Thanks for the advice. What are the chances that my power supply is the culprit? Its an Antec, so I expect pretty damn good quality, but you never know I guess. Also, how do Antec and eVGA handle RMA's? Both of these products (6800 GS and the Antec PSU)were purchased from newegg about 8 months ago. I am wondering just in case I have to send something back to newegg or antec/evga.
-Thanks

smell your parts. if it was as strong as you say, a scent probably still remains. i remember getting that smell when i gave a 5v led 12v.

Yeah. One thing to note is that this is not the first time my 6800 GS has done this. Back in May (I think), my D955XBK intel board died, I switched my GS out of that thing into a different system and the second I hit the power button the graphic card started smoking and that strong burning smell filled the room. Luckily the card still ran fine after that, it ran fine until now...
Note that this time I did not see any smoke, I just smelled something.

does your case have a window now? i would look at your card closely and follow the power leads to any chips or caps on the pcb, because my guess is one is melted/blown.

Yes it does have window. I just moved the whole system out and removed the side door. I am looking at my GS for anything strange.

I tested a friends card and it worked fine on my system. I also found a small area on the 6800 GS which was burned (On the backside), it is a very small area on the card but is obviously enough to screw things up.
So should I send this thing back to newegg or Evga? I have never actually RMAed before.

i would give evga a call. explain honestly, tell them it was being used in normal conditions at stock settings, and it smoked, then worked fine then burned somewhere and doesnt work right. they shouldnt hesitate to replace.
