i took off the stock chipset cooler/mosfet heatpipe gizmo all together, replaced the chipset cooler

and then i took a lighter and heated up the mosfet thing by the heatpipe (to melt the glue crap in there) and just pulled the heatpipe out, and re-mounted the mosfet sink with ceramique in place of the terribly thick gray pad

can get pics if necessary

But the mosfets aren't perfectly on the same level. The thermal tape is used by Asus in part (I believe) to account for stack-up tolerance issues. If you use the metal ASUS heatsink w/o the tape you may/will just miss few of the mosfets....

contact seemed to be perfect on the heatsink when i pulled it after i mounted it once and took it just for that reason of checking contact
