I decided to use my power hungry 955XE cpu rated at 130 watts for testing some power supplies I have been sent. But since, i'm planning to take apart my water cooling setup for a clean etc, I will go back to air cooling for cpu for the time being.

I'm going to use a Scythe Infinity (http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/024/scinf1000.html) heatsink which arrived today. I'll play with 3 fan configurations

1. Stock 120x25mm 46.5cfm 0.13amp fan
2. Thermaltake 120x25mm 81cfm 0.40amp fan http://www.thermaltake.com/product/DCfan/VR/35drivebay/a2003/a2003.asp
3. Delta 120x38mm 190cfm 3.0amp fan - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1779677#post1779677

Notes:
I noticed in most pics and reviews the fan is positioned dead center of the fins with part of the fan blowing up the top of heatsink as in pic at http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/024/scinf1000-main.html

I have the fan so it's situated with part of fan blowing at bottom of heatsink so it cools mosfets too http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/cooling/cpu/Scythe/Infinity/thermaltake81cfm/ :)

System:

Pentium D 3.46Ghz 955XE Extreme Edition (130W)
Scythe Infinity with stock 46cfm fan (change to 120x38mm Delta 190cfm 3AMP fan later)
Intel D975XBX Bad Axe rev304 1334 bios
128MB Gainward FX5200 PCI card (initial tests - change to higher end cards later)
3x 320GB Seagate 7200.10 SATAII hdds
Pioneer DVD-RW Burner
1.44MB FDD
850W special psu ;)

Just doing initial temp tests since the Scythe Infinity only arrived today and first time using this heatsink.

For those Core 2 Duo folks wondering, a 955XE @ stock 3460Mhz at 1.275v rated at 130 watts theorectically has more heat output (in terms of wattage) than a Core 2 Duo E6600 @3809Mhz at 1.511v!

Very thorough testing, as always.

So the Infinity and TT are about equal when the same fan is used. Is your 12v rail really at 12.8v?

I'm gonna do DMM measurements on psu a bit later to find out :)

But i did try TT Big Typhoon with 190cfm delta but was 20-25C hotter at idle and load with 955XE.. i.e. 88C load temps... but I think got bad mount heh.

I have several 152 CFM Delta's. I love them. When you need to push a lot of air, nothing beats the Delta's.

I know that the Bad Axe's CPU fan header is rated for 3.0A. Is it safe to use it with something like a 2.0A Delta fan (assuming the fan draws under 3.0A when it starts)?

MUCHO just posted a link in the Deal section for this cooler for $40US. Has anyone tried a push/pull arrangement with 2 120mm fans?

Ooooo, very nice George. How will you be mounting the Delta? I haven't figured out a good way to mount a 38mm thick fan on it yet :(

Also, what other HSFs do you have planned? :)

not much into air these days.. once i clean up and rebuild my water cooling loops.. it's back to H20 for Aussie summer time = bloody hot :D

Gonna use zip ties most likely for 38mm thick fans :)

I believe the system temps are higher on Delta due to the fan being more focused air flow being in the centre versus the TT 81cfm fan having a more even air flow which would help the mosfets under the Scythe Infinity heatsink.

Great work eva2000! Thanks for all the info.

You wouldn't happen to have a panflo L1 or M1, or a Sanyo Denki to add to the testing list? It'd be interesting to see how a fan with similar cfm and noise characteristics (to a 25mm thick fan), but a much higher pressure curve, would do.

Thanks for the testing! :)
So can we say it really helps for the Infinity to replace the fan with something with a higher cfm, for example ~80cfm instead of the stock, but much higher, like 190cfm for example, won't help much extra?
So putting a bit heavier fan on it will help, but it's pretty much useless to put one of them leafblower noise-makers on it :P.

eva2000

All depends on air pressure too 81cfm TT 120x25mm fan has 4.7mmH20 air pressure and that's more than my Panaflo 120x38mm 103cfm fans!

Now how do 2x 120x25mm Thermaltake 81cfm fans (http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/cooling/cpu/Scythe/Infinity/thermaltake81cfm_2x/) in push-pull config do ? :)
