View Full Version : Need the best heatsink for use with no IHS (socket 939), please help
Yeah, so I successfully popped the IHS on my opty 165, this time without killing, stratching or otherwise damaging it in any way :woot:
Anyway my Noctua NH-U12 now has very poor contact with the CPU and temps are significantly higher unless I apply pressure to the top of the heatsink with my hand.
I would like to either make my NH-U12 have better contact with the CPU, or get a new cooler that will work well without the IHS with relative ease.
So, do you guys know if there is a way to make the U12 have better contact or if there is a different heatsink I should get?
Please help me as soon as you can, I would like to get my main PC back online :slapass:
Thanks!

you could buy some new screws with the same thread as the Noctua ones and use them so it'll tighten down more.. but you'd have to be very careful not to tighten too much
I tried shorter screws, the problem is that it is only bolted down on two sides of the cpu, and since the contact area of the core is so small it can tilt in the directions which have no screws. I really need to correct this.

can you post some pics or we can see better what you mean.
By the sounds of it, i would pick up another bracket and use 4 shorter screws on both bracket to lock the cooler in place.
With my Zalman 9500 i soldered a home made bracket to the Zalman one to ensure that the cooler would sit even on the core and not rock. Worked fine untill i broke it so i just replaced the cooler with a ninja.
That was on my old X2 939 chip

So your saying the ninja will work good and have good contact on socket 939 without the IHS?

What is that?
Like a square of material which goes around the core, about the same height as the core, so that the cooler can't tilt and crush the core and lies flat.
This is a shim, on a G70 core, the metal square around it
