Well, I've used 2 different Mountain Mods U2-UFO cubes for many different builds and revisions of thoes builds, but now I'm finally opting for something different with this project. I decided that I'm going to be somewhat normal again, plus I want a rig thats easier to transport to LAN's, and one that just doesn't take up as much space or make as much noise. This time around, Its going to be a completely silent air-cooled DX10/Vista build, named Project: Omerta. Omerta is the vow of silence taken by Italian mafioso, and thoes who break Omerta are punished by death, without exception.

ok, I got the case yesterday and just threw everything in the for the time being

and yeah... I already cut into the case to make my ultra 120 fit, because I was in a hurry to get it all fit in and running again, and I kinda regret it, but when I take it all out again when I get a new PSU, I'll take my dremel and clean up the hacksaw job I did on the case

but so far, so good - case looks dead sexy and is dead silent as well... and this IS NOT LIGHT - all the case panels are made of 2mm thick aluminum

did some wire management - modified a molex to SATA power cable and added extra snap-on SATA connectors spaced for the drives :)

Nice. Do the drive HS/Fs even get warm?

Sneaky
10-12-2006, 04:13 PM
the raptors get a tiny bit warm, but otherwise they're pretty cool, especially with the 2 120mm's in the front blowing right over them

Get a HIS IceQ 3 series card to silence it, a friend has it and it is quiet and works well. Wish I had one but they didn't exist when I built my system :(

Looking good!

i have a thermalright HR-03 GPU heatsink coming :)

not gonna spend the money on a new card just to get the heatsink, when the thermalright HR-03 is still better than it :) (see thread in air cooling section for performance specs on the HR-03)

SparkyJJO

really... hmm... I thought it would be plagued by the same problem the vf900 and accelero have with not evicting the heat from the case. If it doesn't though then that might be what I should get then :)

I just noticed, nice mod job to get that ultra 120 in there :D

Sneaky

here's user results of the HR-03 off of OCforums.com

Arctic Cooling X2 on 2 Sapphire X1900XT 512mb in crossfire mode:
TIM: Arctic Silver Ceramique
idle: 56C
load (2h of Oblivion): 78C

Thermalright HR03 (passive without fans blowing on it)
TIM: Arctic Silver AS5
idle: 45C
load (2h of Oblivion): 67C

Thermalright HR03 (with 2 S-Flex 120mm fans blowing from side of case)
TIM: Arctic Silver AS5
idle: 38C
load (2h of Oblivion): 58C

and I'll have a 92mm fan mounted directly on the heatsink, so temps should be even sexier than thoes :)

and yea, I did a quick hack job to make the U-120 fit in the case, but I'm gonna clean it up later with my dremel later to make it look a bit nicer and less ghetto

Oh man, Nice Case :D

I've been thinking about getting one myself.

I like it. I think I'm going to buy some passive HD heatsinks and turn my HD fans to 5v. I never though of that until I saw this post for some reason. Thanks :)

was doing an order for a friend/customer, and decided to pick up a set of black anodized aluminum Lian-Li casters from performance-pcs, along with one of thoes little 6-port sunbeam fan plug gizmo's like FCG had in his new Lian-Li build

I'm gonna wait until the caster set arrives before I install the HR-01 and HR-03 on the NB and GPU, as if I'm gonna take everything out of the case, I might as well do it all at once and get the wheels on at the same time :)

Sneaky, how much air do those arctic cooling fans push ? And how quiet are they ?

Link to get them ?

Thankyou :D

Also, where do you plan on getting that ram ? Is it handpicked ?

NICE BUILD :rocker: :rocker:

Sneaky
10-13-2006, 01:43 PM
yes, the RAM is hand picked (not sure if I'm getting it yet), and the Arctic Cooling fans are found here:

120mm: http://www.svc.com/af12025.html

92mm: http://www.svc.com/af9225.html

80mm: http://www.svc.com/af8025.html

I love them - more airflow than yates and just a tiny bit louder, and its not a sleeve bearing, plus all the wires come sleeved in black already :)

Thanks Sneaky !!! :D I think Ill order a few for my case :)

I think I might go ahead and try and do an imitation of your silent build, just need to find a nice case to implement with ;)

Just how big is that case ? I know its mid tower, but is that fairly large or what ? I havent really had one in soo long.

@sneaky- if you had 90 degree sata cables for your hard drives you could probably get away with turning your hard drives around to help a little with the cable management.

Sneaky
10-13-2006, 04:27 PM
nope - couldn't turn around the drives, but I do have 4 90 degree SATA II cables on the way, so that'll clean it up real good

I just used the cables that I had for now when I tossed the build in the case (stock D975XBX cables)

Sneaky

just got my HR-03 today and mounted a Arctic Cooling 92x25mm fan on there - HOLY CRAP! full load tops out at 48ºC, and it idles at around 35ºC - that UNHEARD OF for a x1900XTX with air cooling... much less silent air cooling at that

thermalright definitely hit the nail on the head with this! :woot:

but somewhat OT bad news... the HR-05 NB cooler I ordered won't fit on my P5WDG2-WS Pro because the Ultra-120 is blocking it :(, but I guess my old trusty NB-1C will have to suffice (although it does the job just fine)

but here's some pics:

thank you to whoever posted a link to silverpcs.com - they had a black Lian Li PSU backplate to replace the silver one on my case, as well as black M3 thumbscrews, plus chrome Lian Li vented PCI cover plates which I had never seen before

ordered thoes, and will hopefully get my black aluminum LL wheels and 90º SATA cables too sometime this week :)

Sneaky

got the black aluminum Lian Li wheels in today:

What temps did you get with your water setup on your GPU?

I like your air cooling setup, but I was a bigger fan of your water coling setup:D. looked erally nice.

Sneaky
10-19-2006, 04:15 PM
Just finished sleeving the button/led assembly

http://www.fragtek.com/sneaky/omerta/mod1_06.JPG

IIRC, water temps on the GPU were low 30's max load with the BIP II for the GPU loop & MP-1 :)

Sneaky
10-19-2006, 07:58 PM
got it all put back together, with a little bit of wire management :) (stupid SATA cables are too long cause the shorter ones were OOS... it works though *shrug*)

Sneaky

handles have been a temptation... but we'll see about it

anyways, I got the vented PCI covers and black PSU bracket from silverpcs.com today

Hi Sneaky
Very Nice Build, I was wondering where you found the heatsinks for the hardrives, or are they custom built?

Sneaky
11-06-2006, 01:57 PM
the HDD sinks came with the case :)

thunderstruck!
11-08-2006, 09:23 PM
The real question is...how silent is it? What can you hear?

Sneaky
11-08-2006, 09:45 PM
the only distinct sound is the PSU fan (panaflo high-speed 80mm), and my 2 74gb raptors chugging away

thunderstruck!
11-08-2006, 11:17 PM
It make it quieter if you soundproofed the case. You don't have to take anything out, just put sound dampening foam on the side panel, bottom, and top, and maybe along the back side. It deadened the noise in my case, can barely hear anything. Frozencpu sells some, and so does mcmaster-carr. I don't know which is better though.
