Well I installed RC1 yesterday, but noticed it was on the wrong partition, so I formated the drive again to redo the partitions. Installed Vista again and now I have 2 Vista entries in the Vista bootloader. I havent found out yet how to remove the broken one.
Does anyone know how to do that?
Repair options in the setup dont help :/

systems properties and click advanced tab. then click settings. edit the system startup.

I just had to edit a dual boot server 2003, and rc1.

Doesen't work whit the classic way, Boot.ini was changed whit BCD, so try something like this:

VistaBootPRO 3.1 Beta (http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/VistaBootPRO--Beta-Download-40162.html)

VistaBootPRO is an application used to make changes to the Windows Vista Boot Configuration Data (BCD) registry quickly and easily, in a fraction of the time it takes to use the alternative, which is the command prompt based application bcdedit.exe, located in the Windowssystem32 folder of Windows Vista.

Designed for both beginners and advanced users, VistaBootPRO can be used to make "cosmetic" changes to the Windows Vista boot Menu such as changing the name of the Operating Systems shown in the boot menu and make advanced "functional" changes like adding an Operating System to the boot menu and repairing the Windows Vista boot configuration data.

Advanced settings include backing up and exporting your boot loader configuration and modifying various details for the entries.

For those who have used bcdedit.exe in the past, you will be impressed with the ease of use and functionality that VistaBootPRO provides.

Requirements:

· The Vista boot loader (installs with Vista, not removed by formatting)
· Windows 2k, 2k Server, XP, 2003 Server, Vista, or Longhorn Server
· .NET 2.0 Framework (included with Vista, for other operating systems it is available free from Microsoft.com)

Thanks for the info, will try that later.

On my other rig, my master hdd died and I had to rewrite the mbr. I had win2k, win2k3 and Vista rc1 installed.
I wasnt able to make it work again without reinstalling at least 1 os.
There is a boot folder on the vista dvd and a tool called bootsect, but it didnt write the mbr, though it said it did. I tried every available option without luck. Maybe a bug.
Reinstalling win2k3 and edit the boot.ini worked to revive win2k. gonna install rc2, so I formated the rc1 partition.

If you don't want to try a third party program just boot to your XP cd, hit R for recovery console then once at c: prompt (cd .. to get to root)

fixboot c:

fixmbr

You must make sure the drive you want to fix is the active parition, the second hard drive in your boot sequence after the cd-rom. Just dir the drive to make sure.

That gets rid of the Vista bootloader...Then you could rewrite it with the repair tools on the Vista DVD or that bootsect.exe thing, which I don't know anything about yet....

The first time I installed it put the vista bootloader on my primary system hard drive I think because my Vista partition was not set active, which was sort of annoying. So watch out for that...usually when screwing with OSes I just unplug whatever drive I really don't want to see messed up.
