View Full Version : Question about my 3700+ and IHS

I've been contemplating removing the IHS on my 3700+ but I don't know if it will really yield me that better of temps. Here is what I have:

3700+ @ 2.86GHz with 1.5v
Zalman CNPS9500 cooler with the fan @ ~1800 RPM
Arctic Silver 3 (yeah I know 5 is probably better but I forgot to order it)
temps under moderate load 45-46*C on PC Probe, 47-48*C on coretemp
under heavy load 47*C on PC Probe, 49-50*C on coretemp

I have my Asus Q-Fan set to turn the CPU fan up to full when the CPU hits 47*C, so under heavy load I can hear the fan speed up for a moment, then slow down, repeat.

My question is, do these temps seem about normal, and would I really see any improvement by removing the IHS? I assume I'd need a shim of some sort to protect the core from getting crushed by the 9500. Would this help my OC at all?

I wonder about the mounting though, when it is all the way tightened down I can still rotate the cooler some until it hits the brackets. Seems to me that it isn't getting that tight... maybe instead of removing the IHS I just need to find a way to tighten the cooler down more to apply more pressure? Contact seems OK but I don't really have a known "good" contact to compare to with the same cooler.

By the way, it is perfectly stable at the settings I have it at - been running that way since I got it in April. I was just wondering if it would be worth the risk. I kind of wanted to hit 2.9GHz but 2.86GHz is the highest I can get it stable. 2.9 runs but then it gets unstable later on (which is why I wonder about temps).

Thanks!

*EDIT* Oh yeah I plan to go watercooling at some point here when I get money (ha that'll be the day!)

If you want your cpu that cool, why not just turn the fan up to 100% at like 40C or something.

because I like silence as well, and the fan at 100% gets a little noisy. I'm wondering though if it isn't possible to get that much cooler without more noise. If that is the case I'll keep it where it is then.
