View Full Version : FX-55 or 4400+ X2 ?
I'm looking at them both as they are both in my price range.
I have SLI and Raid0.
I only use this rig for BF2, BF 2142 soon, and maybe some CS:S.
I'v allways wanted a FX for the multi unlocked. I have a chilly1 SS that isn't being used cause my Optiy 148 is cold bugged.
I could run water for the FX or TTBT for air.
I would like 3ghz or more on either the FX or the 4400+ x2.
I know BF2 don't use dual core and never will. So just higher mhz will be better.
But I know SLI benifits from dual core. And could give me some performance increace. Even at lower clock speed vs the FX.
What sould I look at buying?
FX-55 or 4400+ X2 ?
Thanks,
Peace, Nugz

personally, id go for the dual core. i cant stand single cores anymore. though an unlocked multi a64 sounds like alot of fun...thats a tough one.

I say the 4400, Mine runs @ 2915 MHz stable :D and its dual core to boot.
I just went from an Opteron 148 that ran @ the same speeds, but in all around usage this just seems to run smoother.

go with the SLi since you got dual core...that's what afireinside told me when he was first and i was 6th on the orb with sli 7800gt's

I spotted a ncie FX-57 in the classifieds though...
You all seem to think the same as me, lol
Newegg has the FX-55 for $229
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103527
FX-55 Clawhammer for $205
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103496
FX-57 for $299
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103558
4400+ X2 for $226
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103546
4800+ X2 for $280
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103544
And I do not do anything on this rig except play BF2. I have 2 other computers that I do everything else on.
Just will dual core be better for my SLI? or higher mhz? for basicly BF2.

A FX-55 might not overclock as well as you like. You either get the Clawhammer, which is more limited by design. Or the San Diego, then you have the lower bin as the FX-57 was produced during the same time and your FX-55 is the low bin. Maybe the Clawhammer is the right thing to buy as it probably has the best chance not to be cold-bugged.
For the games you list the dual-core is useless. But realistically you will play other games during the lifetime of this rig.
Why not sell the phase-change cooler and get a Core2Duo rig? :) [takes cover]

dual core definitely. single cores are going to be dying out in a year. we all know dual core processors will be around quite a while. multicore is the future. get one.
Why not sell the phase-change cooler and get a Core2Duo rig? :) [takes cover]
2 reasons
1. DDR2 prices are outrageous, I need 2 gigs of DDR2 and atleast DDR2 800.
2. DFI needs a Intel SLI board, I'm a DFI fan forever now. I hate ASUS now. Can't change my mind on that.
DFI will allways be my only MB.
I know a E6300 at stock will beat a FX clocked to 3ghz.
I want to buy a all new rig, just need DFI to geta SLI, Intel board, and the DDR2 prices to drop.
Untill then, AMD CPU's are going cheap. might as well buy one now and ride the price hike on DDR2 out and wait for DFI to make a intel/SLI board.
Might just pop the lid on this 148 and try for 3ghz on air, and wait and skip dual core, and jump on DDR2 when quad core comes out.
Thanks for the replys, leaning to the 4400+ X2, seeing as it helps SLI for now.

I know a E6300 at stock will beat a FX clocked to 3ghz.
It's not that bad. The speed advantage at same clock for one core each is 20-25% (but it can jump to 50 or even 90% on some applications).
Personally I am tempted by the $300 FX-57, too, for simple-threaded games.

you can allways buy used chips, got my fx-60 from e-bay for 390$ a pretty damn good bargain.
lets get back to choosing a best chip for you, well i whould say that a dual-core cpu has my vote, but a fx-55 has allso few good features, one of the most obvious being that fx-55 has a awesome overclocking potential, you might be able to see over 3ghz oc's with little effort, then again 4400+ is a better Price\ performance choise at stock speeds, and with right kind of cooling you might get really close to 3ghz. so get 4400+ you wont regret it.
The answer is: DUH !!! What are you going to do with a $500 single core lol.
As mentioned earlier, the FX-55 is at $200 and the FX-57 is at $300.
For single-core games that clearly puts them into a position of best performance for the money.
The only question is whether you really want to ignore threaded games and desktop performance.

LOL... Dual core here......
Once you go dual core, you'll never go back to single core..... Everything is SO much nicer with dual core.

Thanks for all the advice,
Newegg droped the price down to $219 for the FX-55, I bought it. Be here 10-9-06 (mon) damn weekends.
I have every kind of cooling, Water, pelti setup and chilly1 SS, And both my 3000+ sucks under cold and the 148 HTT stops at around 260 under cold.
I got the FX cause, this will be it for the nice "old" king. $200 for a CPU that use to be $800+, and I have allways drooled over it, wanting the multi unlocked.
Dual core will be around alot longer than these FX's will. So I can allways buy a dual core in a month or so.
And all I do with this rig is, turn it on, play BF2, shut it off, turn it on and try my 148 to 3ghz will no success, turn it off pissed. lol I allready beat Oblivion, so thats going to be deleted soon, and BF 2142 will be all I play, and now with a 3 month old boy, I don't have to much time to sit and play RPG's.
I'm going to set up the FX on my other DFI MB and chilly1 SS first and try for 3500mhz or more, then it will go into my gaming rig.
And from this,

So I can allways buy a dual core in a month or so.
You ought to have fun with that FX-55. Regarding the 4400 dual core, they seem a good deal for the money, but the 110W are very constipated overclockers and the 89W are only slightly better. I'm running a 89W 4400 now and have so far been only to get 11x245, P-95 stable. I can boot at 2800 MHz, play 3D games, but have not found what it takes to remain P95 stable yet. Comparing my SD3700 at 2900 MHz to the 4400 at ~2700 MHz, the dual core has much lower latency when executing programs, games play smoother. Gaming differences between the 2 cpu's, using my 7900 GT KO card (recently upgraded), with the dual core I lost a few frames because of the reduction in raw cpu MHz, but got those frames back by oc'ingg the vid card. BF2 plays much more smoothly with the dual core than on the higher clocked single core. Now with the GX2, all games play very smoothly at very high quality settings with average frames exceeding 60+ fps, on average. I hadn't realized it at the time, but the dual cores are said to give SLI systems a bit of a boost. When gaming on the single core, the core was often at 100% cpu utilization, now with the dual core, if one core maxes out, the second picks up the slack. But for sheer speed, a single core still can't be beat. When you go dual core consider that for the $ spent and best possible achievable oveclock, the Opty 165's seem to be a better bet. Still at the end of the day, my 4400 performs on par with a stock FX-60 for one third of the price.

Yeah, I've got one of those $139 FX-55 on the way to me now...just couldn't pass on the chance to get those unlocked upside multis at what amounts to budget prices. There is still something of value in my eyes to having an FX processor.
The way I figure it, it is worth that just for the fun of it...basically even if it is a lower binned FX-57 it still amounts to an A64 San Diego 4000, but with unlocked upward multipliers...for the same price as a locked 4000 (before prices went up again on them). The boxed 4000 was selling for the same $139 a few weeks ago at the egg and now it is closer to $200.
Only downside is that it is OEM without warranty, and I know how everyone here likes to make sure that we keep our warranties intact. :D
The OEMs seem to be the outer edge of the wafer, and retal is the more better inside of the wafer. Don't quote me on that.
Yeah I saw Newegg had the Optiy 165's back in for a day @ $159, And if they come back in I'll pick one of them up. Main thing is the 1mb cach.
As stated, I wanted and picked the FX for sheer matter of getting a FX finally. You can tell they are trying to get rid of there stock of these FX's. So I had to jump on it. It's allready sitting at UPS about a mile from my house."BUT" I have to wait till Monday, grr I hate weekends lol.
Yeah as for dual core, I'll get the cheapest 1mb cach dual core 939 CPU I can, next week or so. Just had to jump on this FX befor they are gone forever, and I bet in a few months you wont be able to buy a single core FX anywhere.
