According to motherboard makers, AMD has notified them of its intent to delay adoption of DDR3 for at least 6 to 9 months. This delay will now align DDR3 acceptance with AMD's release of Socket AM3, due out in mid-2008, which also coincides with its 45 nm product announcements.

According to AMD, Socket AM2+ will serve as an interim solution and will provide the platform support for AMD's first true dual-core solution, Altair, a K8L quad-core due out next year. The only real difference between Socket AM2 and Socket AM2+ is the inclusion of the HyperTransport 3.0 standard instead of just 1.0.

The delay does not seem to affect anything significantly, as the company's products will still be launching on other platforms, but it does run contrary to what we've been seeing at Intel. AMD's rival has ramped up its DDR3 acceptance and seems to be rather gung-ho about it, even going so far as to reportedly push FB-DIMM aside slightly to make room on its roadmap (as has AMD--see our coverage). This will put DDR3 on Intel solutions nearly a year sooner than on AMD solutions; that could be a very significant factor and definitely one deserving attention in the Geek arena.
