With the Software Protection Program, customers will be asked to activate their copy of Vista with a valid product key within 30 days of installation. If the user fails to do so, the operating system will operate in a "reduced functionality mode." In reduced functionality mode, users will not have access to ReadyBoost, the Windows Aero user interface, Windows Defender or optional software updates. Users will, however, still be able to access critical security updates from Windows Update.
Microsoft also has the option to deem an installation of Windows Vista invalid at any time.

True, however how hard do you think it would be for Microsoft to add a switch that forces you to pay them EVERY SINGLE month just to use their OS?
and if you don't they could SUE your ass

MS isnt stupid enough to do this. Linux is getting very close for people to switch over. And if all goes right, we just may see OSX for a PC in the near future. Im sure Apple is licking their chops at how many people would switch over.

This guy's right. XP doesn't just limit your options. It completely locks you out and leaves you in the welcome screen until you get that sucker activated.

Who here is actually going to spend the money on this before SP1? Why waste your time and money on something that won't work right until a few patches. This is just like XP, wait until driver support is there and then make a decision.
Like someone else said wait a few weeks and it will be cracked. Where there is a will there is a way. I stopped activating my version of Windows because it became a pain. Fortuantely there is a nice utility for Windows XP that bypasses the entire WPA. After the first time I had to re-activate Windows using the phone I figured that was enough.

I don't think it's much worse than having a WoW account... Agreed, M$ don't have monthly fees, but what prevents Blizzard from locking an account, even after you activate it?? And still, I don't hear any complaints about that... :)

I don't have a WoW account, so I can't agree or disagree. However, I don't pay Microsoft a fee for their OS every month. If that was the case I'd switch to Linux, any piece of software that charges me monthly to use it I'll pass.

Just another thing for the crackers to circumvent.
And so the cycle of life continues unabated.

Well, If Microsoft did that after charging you 150$ for the software, I'd have to agree.. I'm amazed Blizz actually has the nerve to pull 15$ out everybody's asses each month... (I froze my account a few months ago, in case you were wondering :p:)

He,he good point, but I bet all those things will still be working in the backgrround and probaply use even more memory just for kicks

The best option of all is buy a copy, then download a corporate (non-activable) version from inet and use that. They'll never sue you because you've bought a legal copy, and you only use one copy. The difference in the serial key is minimal :D
And as PkG.1337 said, I don't need any of those. Aero is cool yeah, but after 2 months I'll be using Classical Theme like in XP.

Microsoft is doing away with "no activiation required" VLKs for corporate clients. The VLKs will still need to be activated for each install. The VLKs activation will allow MS to keep track of the # of activations a company has.

What? This is actually way more freedom than the activation mechanism of WinXp. Read posts next time :slapass:.
Besides, everybody in the software industry has been saying that for years.

If the article can be trusted, and all that the non-activated version lacks is the
1) useless feature: skins
2) useless feature: ram drive support
3) useless feature: antispyware solution for IE
then there is no point in even bothering to crack it; it's better without all that crap.

The only thing interesting about Vista is DirectX 10 the rest is useless is you ask me - I'v seen better Aero interface (like Mac's) on linux.
PS.In Conlcusion DX10 might cost 400$ is you go whit Ultimate. :fact:
